St. James United Church

St.

St. James United Church is a Victorian Gothic Revival church at 463 Sainte-Catherine Street West in downtown Montréal. Built from 1887 to 1889, it was Canada’s largest Methodist church at the time. Look for the twin spires and detailed stonework outside, then step inside to see the Casavant Frères organ and a stained-glass window honouring congregation members who served in the First World War. The church is also a national historic site and a Quebec religious heritage building.

The congregation dates to 1803. In the late 19th century, it decided to move from St. James Street, and the present church was built between 1887 and 1889. Designed by architect Alexander Francis Dunlop, it was the largest Methodist church in Canada when it opened and became known as the Cathedral Church of Methodism.

The building’s scale and design were intended to evoke a medieval French cathedral. Its Victorian Gothic Revival exterior is marked by twin towers, carved stone details and a rose window. The church became part of the United Church of Canada in 1925, following the union of Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregationalist denominations.

For much of the 20th century, commercial buildings stood in front of the church on Sainte-Catherine Street, concealing its façade. The commercial structures were later removed, and restoration work made the church visible from the street again. A public square was created in front of it as part of the redevelopment.

The church is now seen alongside the shops and businesses of downtown Montréal. Commercial spaces are integrated into the building’s frontage, a reminder that the church has had to make room for practical uses as well as worship and heritage preservation.

Details to look for inside

The Casavant Frères organ is one of the church’s notable interior features. The instrument has more than 4,000 pipes. The stained-glass window by Charles William Kelsey is a First World War memorial dedicated to members of the congregation who served in the war.

The interior is large, with a peaceful atmosphere when worship music is playing. Take a moment to look up and notice how the stonework, windows and organ shape the space. The church remains an active place of worship, so visitors should be considerate if a service is taking place.
