PHI

PHI presents contemporary art from Montréal and around the world in two restored heritage buildings in Old Montréal.

PHI presents contemporary art from Montréal and around the world in two restored heritage buildings in Old Montréal. Exhibitions change frequently, with installations, performance, sound and technology among the forms shown. Past exhibitions have included Yayoi Kusama’s infinity mirror rooms and pumpkins, as well as charcoal works by Lee Bae. Admission to the foundation’s exhibitions is free, and staff can help explain works that have little or no accompanying text. Download the free app for added exhibition context, and check the layout before you begin: the two buildings can be confusing to navigate.

Contemporary art in two heritage buildings

PHI
PHI

PHI is a nonprofit contemporary art organization at 451 Rue Saint-Jean in Old Montréal. Its galleries occupy two restored heritage buildings, and exhibitions present work by artists from Montréal and around the world. The program also includes public events, collaborative projects and educational activities.

The foundation was founded in 2007 by Phoebe Greenberg, a theatre producer and businesswoman. It was formerly known as DHC/ART. Its exhibitions change regularly, so the artists and works on view depend on the current program.

Installations and changing exhibitions

PHI
PHI

PHI’s exhibitions can bring together visual art, performance, sound and technology. Past presentations have included Yayoi Kusama’s infinity mirror rooms and pumpkins, and Lee Bae’s charcoal works. The Kusama installation let visitors experience the mirror rooms individually. These are examples of earlier exhibitions, not a guide to what is currently on view; check PHI’s program before planning around a particular artist.

Some works have little or no explanatory text beside them. Staff can discuss the art with visitors, and a free PHI app provides additional exhibition information. If you want more context as you move through the galleries, download the app before arriving.

Finding your way around

The two buildings are on Rue Saint-Jean, but the entrances and exhibition layouts can take some figuring out. Check the directions for your specific visit and ask staff which entrance to use if anything is unclear. A current exhibition may involve more than one space, so confirm the route before you start.

The galleries are wheelchair accessible, including the entrance and restroom. PHI also has a restroom and a restaurant. Tickets in advance are recommended, so check the current booking details before setting out.

Events and return visits

Alongside its exhibitions, PHI hosts public events and collaborative projects. Its programming has included Le Marché des Fêtes, a holiday market with creations by local artists and makers, including posters, jewelry, ceramics, sculptures and publications. Event dates and offerings vary, so look at the current calendar if you are planning a visit around a special program.

If you live in Montréal and expect to visit more than once, a season pass may suit you better than planning each visit separately. Admission to the foundation’s exhibitions is free; check the current ticket information, particularly for special exhibitions.
