At the mouth of the Fraser River in Richmond, Iona Beach Regional Park pairs open shoreline with a long, flat walk out along a jetty. The four-kilometre route gives you views across the water and close-up sights of aircraft landing at Vancouver International Airport. Look for eagles and other birds along the Pacific Flyway, and watch the water for seals. The exposed park is a good place for a picnic or a sunset walk, but bring water and sun protection: shade is scarce and wind can make it chilly.

The jetty walk

The park sits where the Fraser River meets the sea, with a long shoreline and open views across the water. Its best-known walk follows a jetty for about four kilometres in one direction. The route is flat and made of crushed gravel, so comfortable walking shoes are useful, particularly if soft soles bother you. With little shade along the way, take water and a hat.

The walk back covers the same ground. Allow roughly two to three hours for the round trip, with time to pause along the route. Restrooms are available along the trail and in the picnic area. The open setting can be windy and chilly, even when the walk feels calm; bring a layer you can put on or take off.

Birds, shoreline and aircraft

Iona Beach lies on the Pacific Flyway, a route used by migrating birds, and the park is a place to look for a range of species, including eagles. The meeting of river and ocean also makes the shoreline a natural place to watch for wildlife. Keep an eye on the water for seals.

The jetty also gives you a clear view of aircraft near Vancouver International Airport. Planes approach and land close enough to become a striking part of the walk. If photographing them is a priority, a telephoto lens helps: the runways are still some distance away.

At low tide, visitors can walk along the beach and explore tide pools. Check when the tide is due back before heading onto exposed shoreline, as the water can return quickly.

Planning a visit

Iona Beach works well for a walk, birdwatching, photography or a picnic. Picnic tables and restrooms are available, and the park has parking. There are no food options on-site, so pack snacks if you plan to stay. Arriving early can help with parking on busy weekends.

Spring and fall are useful seasons for a visit if you want to avoid summer heat. Sunset brings appealing light over the water, though the park can be busier then. The landscape is exposed, with no shady spots to rely on, so plan your clothing and water accordingly. Dogs are allowed in the park; check local signs for area-specific guidance.
