Surprise Corner Viewpoint

Surprise Corner is a viewpoint on Buffalo Street near the junction with Tunnel Mountain Road. Its name refers to the sudden view that opens up as you reach the bend. From the platform, the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel stands out against the surrounding mountains, with the Bow River below. Sulphur Mountain is also visible from the lookout.

The hotel’s castle-like outline is the main focus for photographs, but the river and mountain backdrop give the view its wider setting. Changing light can alter the scene through the day, with sunrise and sunset noted as appealing times to visit.

Trails continue along the Bow River and through forest toward a viewpoint of the Hoodoos. The path gives you a way to extend a brief photo stop, although the lookout itself is also suited to a short visit. In winter, take care on the stairs, which can become slippery.
