Estação Pinacoteca is an exhibition venue in São Paulo’s Luz area, housed in a former Sorocabana Railway warehouse at Largo General Osório, 66. Built in 1914 to hold railway offices and storage, the building later served as the headquarters of the Department of Political and Social Order from 1942 to 1983. Inside, look for the ground-floor historical information about Brazil and the current exhibitions. Some displays lack English translations, so plan for Portuguese-language material. The Pinacoteca’s other venue is about 200 metres away.
A former railway warehouse

The building at Largo General Osório was constructed in 1914 for the Sorocabana Railway, which connected São Paulo and Sorocaba. Designed by architect Ramos de Azevedo, it held the railway’s offices and warehouses. After the railway company completed new facilities in 1938, the building was made available to the state.
From 1942 to 1983, it housed the Department of Political and Social Order. Today, it is one of several buildings used by the São Paulo State Pinacoteca in the Luz area.
Exhibitions and historical material

The venue has a large exhibition space for collections and temporary shows. The ground floor also has historical information about Brazil, though it may be available only in Portuguese. Some exhibition material lacks English translations, so visitors who need English interpretation should take that into account when planning their visit.
The Pinacoteca’s other venue is about 200 metres away. The short distance does not remove the need to plan your route: the surrounding area has safety concerns, and visitors recommend using an Uber between venues.
