Praia do Diabo is a small beach beside Arpoador Rock, between Arpoador and the rocky wall leading toward Copacabana. Its open-sea waves and rocky edges give this quiet stretch a very different feel from Rio’s larger beaches. Come to sunbathe, watch surfers from the sand or use the outdoor exercise bars. The water can be dangerous, so swimming and surfing are not suitable for inexperienced visitors. You can also find locals playing beach games such as frescobol.
Finding the beach

Praia do Diabo sits to the left of Arpoador Rock, reached on foot by a walkway and plaza. A natural rock wall borders the stretch of sand toward Copacabana’s fort. The beach is small, so it is easy to overlook when you are looking out from Arpoador.
Waves and beach activities

The beach faces the open sea, and high tides can bring powerful waves. The nearby rocks make the water especially risky for inexperienced surfers. From the sand, you can watch local surfers or join in relaxed beach games such as frescobol and slack line. Exercise bars are also set up beside the beach. For facilities, use the toilets and showers at nearby Arpoador or Copacabana.
