CRAB, the Brazilian Reference Centre for Craft, is a cultural centre at Praça Tiradentes in central Rio de Janeiro. Its exhibitions introduce Brazilian art and craft through changing displays, with past subjects including carnival costumes, regional biodiversity and the work of Tania de Maya and Dona Izabel Mendes da Cunha. The centre occupies historic buildings, and you can also browse artisan-made pieces in the shop, visit the café and library, or take a break on the rooftop terrace. Admission is free; bring photo ID to enter.

Exhibitions on Brazilian craft

CRAB, the Brazilian Reference Centre for Craft, presents exhibitions about the country’s art and craft traditions. The displays change, so the subject depends on what is showing during your visit. Past exhibitions have covered carnival craft, regional biodiversity, and the work of artists including Tania de Maya.

One exhibition focused on Dona Izabel Mendes da Cunha and her connection to craft traditions in the Jequitinhonha Valley of Minas Gerais. Another displayed elaborate carnival headpieces and costumes. These varied subjects give the centre room to present both individual artists and broader craft traditions.

The shop and other spaces

The centre’s shop sells work by artisans from across Brazil and has its own entrance. Items highlighted include Indigenous benches from Alto Xingu communities, leather goods by Ceará artisan Espedito Seleiro, accessories made from tire rubber by Edy Ferreira, and bags made from recycled fabrics by Rio artist Sandra Portela.

There is also a café, a library and a rooftop terrace. The centre occupies three historic buildings at Praça Tiradentes, and the architecture is part of the visit. You can explore the exhibitions and then spend time in these other spaces.

Planning your visit

CRAB is in central Rio, at Praça Tiradentes, 69. Admission is free, and photo identification such as a passport or CPF is requested at entry. The exhibition area is small, so around 30 to 45 minutes is a practical amount of time to set aside.

The centre is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 am to 5 pm, and closed on Mondays and Sundays. Its indoor exhibitions make it an option for a rainy day in the area.
