Casa França-Brasil is a cultural center in Rio de Janeiro’s historic center, with changing art exhibitions inside a neoclassical building that opened in 1820. The spacious interior pairs a vaulted ceiling with a stone floor, giving each exhibition a distinctive setting. Admission is free. Check what is showing before you go, then take a break at the small bistro or use the reading room, which has plugs for laptops. The building has no air conditioning, so dress lightly on hot days.
A building with changing roles
Casa França-Brasil opened in 1820 as the city’s first commerce square. It was commissioned by King João VI and designed by Grandjean de Montigny, an architect with the French Artistic Mission. The building is identified as Rio’s first example of neoclassical architecture.
It later became a customs house, a role it held until 1944. After further changes of use, it was turned into a cultural center through an initiative by Darcy Ribeiro in the 1980s. It is recognized as national cultural heritage and was listed by Brazil’s National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute in 1938.
Exhibitions and the interior
The center presents temporary exhibitions, so the art on view changes over time. The broad interior can accommodate exhibitions by multiple artists. Its vaulted ceiling and stone floor give the space a strong architectural character, while the layout lets different shows shape how the interior feels.
Check the current exhibition before planning a visit. The center also has a small bistro serving crêpes and a reading room with plugs for laptops. There is no air conditioning, which can make the large interior hot in summer.
