Wien Museum Hermesvilla is a 19th-century villa in Lainzer Tiergarten, a large nature reserve on Vienna’s outskirts. Emperor Franz Joseph had it built for Empress Elisabeth, known as Sisi, in the hope she would spend more time in Vienna. The museum explores the couple’s lives and the villa’s history, with rooms that include a small gym where Elisabeth exercised. After your visit, walk through the surrounding gardens and forest, where sculptures, fountains and wildlife add reasons to stay longer.
A villa built for Empress Elisabeth

Emperor Franz Joseph commissioned Hermesvilla for his wife, Empress Elisabeth, in the hope that she would spend more time in Vienna. Architect Carl von Hasenauer designed the villa, which was built between 1882 and 1886. Elisabeth called it the “Palace of Dreams.”
The villa stands in Lainzer Tiergarten, a large nature reserve that was once a fenced hunting ground for the Habsburg nobility. Its setting made it a retreat from court life, surrounded by woodland and gardens.
Inside the museum

The museum focuses on the lives of Elisabeth and Franz Joseph and the history of their residence. Rooms inside the villa include a small gym where Elisabeth practised sports. The interior is not extensive, so a visit can be relatively short; allow around 45 minutes to look through the museum.
A free audio guide is available. Its recordings run for about three to four minutes each, and seating in the rooms is limited.
Walks in Lainzer Tiergarten
The villa’s gardens have sculptures and fountains, and paths lead into the surrounding forest. Set aside extra time if you want to combine the museum with a walk. The nature reserve is also a place to look out for wild animals.
Bring water and snacks if you plan to spend longer outdoors, and consider insect repellent for the walk.
