The Stadttempel is Vienna’s historic Orthodox synagogue at Seitenstettengasse 4, concealed behind the street-facing façade of a residential building. Built in the Biedermeier style from 1824 to 1826, it is the only one of Vienna’s 93 synagogues to have survived the 1938 pogroms. Its oval main hall and the stories shared on guided tours make a visit a chance to learn about Jewish life in Vienna, past and present. It remains an active place of worship, so access is arranged rather than a casual drop-in.

The Stadttempel stands at Seitenstettengasse 4 in central Vienna. From the street, the synagogue is hidden behind the front of a residential building. The arrangement reflects a 19th-century restriction that prevented non-Catholic places of worship from facing directly onto the street.

The synagogue was built between 1824 and 1826 in the Biedermeier style. Its location within a block of houses is also linked to its survival during the November 1938 pogroms. It was the only synagogue in Vienna to escape destruction; 93 other synagogues and Jewish prayer houses were destroyed.

Inside and on a guided tour

The main hall has an oval shape and detailed Biedermeier design. Guided tours explain the building’s history and the history of Jewish people in Vienna. Some visitors have also seen exhibits in rooms beyond the main hall, though access and tour arrangements can change.

The Stadttempel remains an active centre for worship and learning. Security is therefore strict, and visitors should arrange access ahead of time rather than assume they can enter. Check the synagogue’s website for current tours and any restoration-related changes before planning a visit.
