Musikverein Wien is Vienna’s landmark concert hall at Musikvereinsplatz 1, home to the Vienna Philharmonic and a regular stage for classical performances. Its Golden Hall is known for its gilded caryatids and strong acoustics; the Brahms Hall has its own musical history, with Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann among the performers there. Book a concert to hear the halls in use, or check for an English-language guided tour. Arrive early if you want time to take in the building before the music begins.

The Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, also known as the Wiener Musikverein, began in 1814. A committee led by theatre director Joseph Sonnleithner formed the society to promote music in Vienna. About fifty years later, the society commissioned architect Theophil Hansen to design its building.

The Musikverein opened in 1870. Hansen’s original plan included two performance halls, a music academy, an archive and a library. The academy moved to a separate building in 1909. The concert venue remains best known for its classical performances and its association with the Vienna Philharmonic.

The Großer Musikvereinssaal, or Golden Hall, is the building’s large concert room. Its gilded caryatids are a defining part of the interior, and the hall’s acoustics are a major reason to hear a performance here. The Vienna Philharmonic’s annual New Year’s Concert takes place in the Golden Hall.

Brahms Hall has a different scale and history. Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann performed there. The building also includes other music spaces, so check your ticket for the hall assigned to your event.

Planning a visit

You can experience the Musikverein through a concert or a guided tour. The supplied visitor information lists English-language tours at 1pm daily except Sundays, priced at €10. Check the current tour details before setting out, as schedules can change.

Concert programmes vary. Some events feature orchestral works, while others include opera singers or performers in period costume. One listed Mozart concert lasted about two hours with an interval. Concerts may be held in another venue, so confirm the location when booking. Some events also have standing tickets, while seated tickets reserve a seat.

Allow time to find your way to your seat. Row labels can be confusing, and the seating area may feel cramped, particularly if you are tall. Smart casual clothing is suitable; backpacks and coats you are not wearing are left at the cloakroom. A bar is available inside for drinks before or during a performance.
