Mary at the Strand, or Maria am Gestade, is a Gothic Catholic church at Salvatorgasse 12 in Vienna’s Innere Stadt. One of the city’s oldest churches and a rare survivor of its medieval Gothic architecture, it is worth a pause for its narrow, intimate interior and finely decorated altar, pulpit and stained-glass windows. The church once stood beside an arm of the Danube, and fishermen came here to pray. Step back outside to take in the facade and the stairs leading up to it.
A church beside the former Danube

Maria am Gestade means Mary at the Shore. The name recalls the church’s former position beside the Salzgries, once an arm of the Danube. The waterway has since disappeared from this spot, but the church’s riverside past explains its connection with fishermen, who came here to pray.
The building is among Vienna’s oldest churches and one of the city’s surviving examples of Gothic architecture. Its origins reach back before the late 14th-century church described in accounts of its construction; an older wooden church stood on the site. The structure you see today took shape in the medieval period, when Gothic churches and other buildings were being built across the city.
The facade, steps and tower

The church stands quietly among the buildings of the Innere Stadt. From the front, its facade rises above the approach, with stonework and a tall, open-work spire. The tower is 56 metres high and has appeared in historic images of Vienna.
The stairs leading up to the church are a distinctive part of the visit. Pause there to look back at the exterior before going inside. The building’s position feels different from that of Vienna’s larger churches: it is set slightly above its surroundings, and the approach brings you close to the facade.
Inside the church
The interior is narrow and compact, with a calm atmosphere that gives its details room to hold your attention. Look for the main altar and its sculptures, the stained-glass windows, the decorated pulpit and the paintings. As daylight shifts, it changes the effect of the coloured glass.
Allow a little time to look around rather than heading straight back outside. The church is still a place of worship, so keep your voice low and avoid interrupting people who are praying. French-language masses also connect the church with Vienna’s French-speaking community.
