Mrs Macquarie’s Chair is a sandstone lookout on the harbour edge in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens. Convicts carved the seat in 1810 for Elizabeth Macquarie, wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. From the nearby shoreline and lawns, you can see the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and city skyline together. The walk from the Opera House through the gardens takes about 20 minutes. Come for the harbour views, a picnic or photographs, and carry water on a hot day.
A sandstone seat with a harbour view

The seat is carved into exposed sandstone at Mrs Macquarie’s Point, on a peninsula in Sydney Harbour. Convicts shaped it in 1810 for Elizabeth Macquarie, wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. It is also known as Lady Macquarie’s Chair.
The point was known to the Gadigal as Yurong Point. The sandstone seat and its setting connect the viewpoint to Sydney’s colonial history, while the harbour remains central to what you see from the shore.
Views from the point

The lookout takes in the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and city skyline across the water. Fort Denison is also visible from the area. The shoreline path and grassy spaces provide different places to pause and look back across the harbour; you do not have to sit on the stone seat to enjoy the view.
Light changes the scene through the day. Morning is suggested for views of the bridge, Opera House and skyline; afternoon light can suit silhouettes, while sunset is a popular time for photographs. For night photography, a long exposure can capture the harbour and city lights.
Walking there and spending time
You can reach the point on foot through the Royal Botanic Gardens. The walk from the Opera House takes about 20 minutes. The gardens make it easy to add the lookout to a longer walk, and a visit can also be combined with time among the garden paths and lawns.
There are broad grassy areas around the viewpoint, suitable for a picnic or a rest. Bring your own food and water, particularly on a hot day, as nearby dining options are limited. The site is described as accessible, and the gardens are a family-friendly place to walk.
