Castle Rock Beach

Castle Rock Beach is a small harbour beach in Clontarf, on the Spit to Manly walking track.

Castle Rock Beach is a small harbour beach in Clontarf, on the Spit to Manly walking track. A short detour down steep steps leads to a narrow strip of sand beneath bush-covered sandstone slopes. The calm water can look turquoise on a sunny day, and a large boulder on the shore gives the beach its name. It is a quieter swimming stop than Sydney’s larger beaches, but there is little room on the sand and no facilities. Bring food and water if you plan to linger.

Finding the beach

Castle Rock Beach

Castle Rock Beach is in Clontarf, along the Spit to Manly walking track. From the main track, a short detour descends several steep flights of steps to the shore. The beach can also be reached from Ogilvy Road in Clontarf. It is accessible on foot, and some material notes access by boat as another option.

The beach is a short stop along a larger coastal walk, which also passes places such as Clontarf Reserve and Grotto Point. It sits between Clontarf and Balgowlah, within Sydney Harbour National Park. The walking route is a practical choice if you want to avoid searching for a parking space on the small residential streets nearby.

Sand, rock and harbour water

This is a very small beach, with a narrow strip of sand backed by bushland and rocky slopes. A large boulder on the shore is said to resemble a castle and gives the beach its name. A small waterfall behind the sand is also noted as part of the setting.

The sheltered inlet has calm water, which can appear turquoise on a clear, sunny day. Across the harbour are views towards Balmoral and Edwards beaches. The beach’s compact size and foot access help keep it quieter than the larger swimming spots, though the limited sand can feel crowded at busy times.

Plan a short swim stop

There are no facilities at the beach, so bring food and drinks if you intend to stay. The steps make access more demanding than a walk straight onto the sand, and parking nearby can be difficult. On a weekday, the beach is likely to be less busy than on a weekend; if the sand is full, rocks on the left side can provide another place to settle.
