Hyde Park is a leafy public park in Highgate, about 2km north of Perth’s CBD. Its two lakes, mature trees and grassy picnic areas make it an easy place to slow down between city stops. Follow the flat path around the water for a walk of about 800m, watch the ducks and other birds, or settle in for a picnic beside the lake. Families can use the regular playground and, in summer, the water play area. The park is also a place of significance to Whadjuk Noongar people.

A city park with Whadjuk Noongar significance

Hyde Park
Hyde Park

Hyde Park is in Highgate, around 2km north of Perth’s CBD, at the corner of Vincent Street and William Street. The park’s site and waterways are significant to Whadjuk Noongar people, who lived on and used this land before European settlement. The park remains an important place for recreation, but its cultural connection is part of its story too.

The park was formerly known as Third Swamp Reserve. Today, two lakes and mature trees give it a distinctly green setting within the inner suburbs. Its lawns and picnic areas are used for gatherings, while the paths draw people out for walks and light exercise.

Walk the lakes and find a place to pause

A circuit around the inner lakes is about 800m. The route is flat, making it suitable for an unhurried stroll and accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Benches and grassy areas provide places to stop by the water or sit beneath the trees. Ducks and other birds are often around the lakes; keep an eye on picnic food, as birds may approach it.

The park’s old plane and fig trees are particularly striking as the seasons change. In autumn, some trees turn orange before shedding their leaves. Jacaranda blossoms add purple colour in their season. Sunset is another appealing time for a walk among the trees.

Playgrounds, picnics and the annual festival

Families can choose between a playground with play structures, swings and climbing equipment, and a water play area that is popular in summer. The main playground includes an all-abilities design, with a Liberty swing intended to let children who use wheelchairs enjoy swinging. Shady places nearby give adults somewhere to sit while children play.

Picnic areas and barbecue facilities make the park suitable for a meal outdoors. Hyde Park also hosts an annual festival with food, entertainment, art and craft, live events and rides. If you are visiting for the festival, check its current details before setting out, as the event is separate from a regular park visit.
