On the Australian National University campus in Acton, Drill Hall Gallery presents Australian and international art inside a former military training building. Its exhibitions change through the year, with displays ranging from Aboriginal paintings and Afghan war rugs to enamel work and art made by people with disabilities. The Riverbend Room holds Sidney Nolan’s nine-panel panorama, a permanent work worth setting aside time to see. Entry is free, so you can drop in when an exhibition interests you without buying a ticket.

The building was constructed in 1940 as a training place for soldiers preparing for the Second World War. The 3rd Battalion, Werriwa Regiment, was based there in 1941 and 1942.

In 1984, the interior was remodelled for use as an art gallery. The building received heritage protection in 2004. Before the National Gallery of Australia’s building was completed, it hosted temporary displays of the national collection. The Australian National University took over the venue in 1992, using it to present works from its collection and changing exhibitions.
