Mount Coot-tha Summit Lookout sits above Brisbane at 1012 Sir Samuel Griffith Drive, about 7 kilometres from the city centre. From the observation area, the panorama takes in the skyline and, on clear days, Moreton Bay. Come at sunrise or dusk for changing light over the city, or after dark to see the lights spread across the suburbs. You can drive to the summit or walk up on the Summit Track from the JC Slaughter Falls picnic area. A café and restaurant are at the top.

The view from the summit

Mount Coot-tha is Brisbane’s highest point and one of the city’s clearest vantage points. From the lookout, the view stretches over the skyline and surrounding landscape towards Moreton Bay. On a clear day, the panorama can extend to the Glass House Mountains and Moreton Bay islands.

The city looks different as the light changes. At sunrise, the skyline emerges from the morning light; at dusk, the sky shifts through warm colours and the city lights begin to show. After dark, the lit-up suburbs give you another way to take in the scale of Brisbane. The observation area is the place to pause for the view, whether you arrive by car or on foot.

Walking up to the lookout

The Summit Track starts at the JC Slaughter Falls picnic area and climbs through bushland to the lookout. One route is described as a 1.9-kilometre walk each way; another account gives a 5.4-kilometre return journey, so the distance depends on the route taken. The uphill path is a popular option for walkers and trail runners, with views appearing along the way.

For a longer outing, the Summit and Mahogany trails can be combined into a loop back to the falls. The route includes a dirt track and glimpses of the city. Mount Coot-tha also has other walking tracks and picnic areas, so you can plan a shorter stroll or spend longer exploring the reserve. If you hike near dusk, bring a torch for the descent.

A stop at the summit

The summit has an observation area as well as a café and the Summit Restaurant. You can take a break for coffee or refreshments after the walk, or plan a sit-down meal with a view. Restaurant bookings are essential, so arrange a table ahead of time.

A picnic is another way to make the visit last longer. There are scenic places to stop around the mountain, including picnic areas near the walking routes. The nearby Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mount Coot-tha are about 1.5 miles northeast of the lookout by foot or car, giving you the option to pair the summit with a garden visit.
