The Obelisk rises above Plaza de la República, where Avenida Corrientes meets Avenida 9 de Julio in central Buenos Aires. Built in 1936 to mark 400 years since the city’s first founding, it is one of the city’s clearest landmarks and a focal point for public celebrations and rallies. Look for the inscriptions at its base, then cross the avenue for a view with the large BA letters. Sunset brings warm light to the monument; after dark, it is illuminated against the busy downtown streets.

A monument at the city’s crossroads

Obelisk

The Obelisk stands in Plaza de la República at the intersection of Avenida Corrientes and Avenida 9 de Julio. At 67.5 metres tall, it is easy to spot among the surrounding buildings and a familiar point of reference in central Buenos Aires.

The monument was built in 1936 to mark the 400th anniversary of the city’s first founding by Pedro de Mendoza. Argentine architect Alberto Prebisch designed it in a modernist style, using white stone from Córdoba. Its simple, tapering form has not always been popular: opposition to its appearance and cost led one mayor to call for its demolition. It remains one of the city’s defining landmarks.

The site before the Obelisk

The plaza occupies the former site of the Church of San Nicolás de Bari. The Argentine flag was first displayed there on August 23, 1812, and the church was later demolished to make way for the monument. The inscriptions at the Obelisk’s base commemorate important events in Argentina’s history.

The Obelisk has also become a gathering point for public life. People meet in the surrounding streets for football celebrations, rallies, marches and vigils. The wide avenues and heavy downtown traffic shape the experience: this is a place to see and photograph as you explore the centre, rather than a quiet park for a long break.

Light, photographs and access

At sunset, the Obelisk stands out against the changing sky above 9 de Julio. It is also illuminated at night, when its outline contrasts with the surrounding buildings. For a city-centre photo, look for the large BA letters nearby. Including a person in the frame helps convey the scale of both.

You can walk around the Obelisk using the crosswalks. Accounts of access to the top differ, so do not plan your visit around a climb without checking current arrangements first. The structure is described as having one entrance and four windows near its summit, reached by an internal staircase, but access to the viewing point is not assured.
