The A.R.A. Presidente Sarmiento was built as a training ship for the Argentine Navy and served in that role from 1898 to 1962. It is named for Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Argentina’s seventh president. Today, the ship is a museum moored at Dársena 3 in Puerto Madero.

Its preserved decks and cabins give you a look inside a working naval vessel. Displays include weapons, clothing and navigational tools. Some sections may be closed during a visit, so access around the ship can vary.

The ship carried a sailing rig as well as a large triple-expansion steam engine, supplied by two coal-fired boilers. Four Armstrong gun mounts sit amidships, with two on each side; smaller weapons were also fitted. The forward-firing torpedo tubes are another detail to look for as you explore.

From the deck, you can see the river and Puente de la Mujer. Staff can add context about the ship and its equipment. The museum has restrooms and a wheelchair-accessible elevator; advance ticket booking is recommended.
