Plaza Independencia

Plaza Independencia is Montevideo’s main square, at the boundary between the historic Ciudad Vieja and the newer city.

Plaza Independencia is Montevideo’s main square, at the boundary between the historic Ciudad Vieja and the newer city. Its central landmark is the equestrian statue of José Gervasio Artigas, with his mausoleum below. The surrounding buildings bring together several periods of the city’s architecture, including Palacio Salvo, Solís Theatre, Estévez Palace and the Executive Tower. Look for the old Citadel Gate at the entrance to Ciudad Vieja, then use the plaza as a starting point for exploring the nearby streets.

Plaza Independencia was laid out in the 19th century on land occupied by the Citadel of Montevideo. Its position marks the change from the old fortified city to the later urban expansion. Today, it sits between Ciudad Vieja and the central part of Montevideo, with the old quarter beginning at the Citadel Gate.

The square has long been a setting for major political demonstrations and official public ceremonies. It is also a practical point from which to continue on foot into the historic district or toward the newer city streets.

Artigas and the mausoleum beneath the monument

The bronze equestrian statue at the centre honours José Gervasio Artigas, a national figure in Uruguay’s independence history. Artigas died in exile in Paraguay in 1850. His remains were returned to Montevideo in 1855, and his mausoleum was built beneath the statue in 1977.

The monument gives the open square a clear focal point. The mausoleum below it is part of the site, so visitors can see both the outdoor statue and the resting place beneath it.

Buildings around the plaza

Several prominent buildings face Plaza Independencia. Palacio Salvo and Solís Theatre are among the best-known landmarks; the theatre opened in 1856. Estévez Palace and the Executive Tower also stand along the square, bringing historic and contemporary architecture into view from the same open space.

At one edge, the Puerta de la Ciudadela, or Citadel Gate, marks the entrance to Ciudad Vieja. Looking across the plaza from different sides gives you a view of its varied architectural styles and shows how the square connects the old city with central Montevideo.
