Crossing the causeway

Lihou
Lihou

Lihou lies off Guernsey’s west coast and is reached by a cobbled stone causeway that is exposed at low tide. The walk across takes about 20 minutes. The route stays wet, and the rocks and seaweed provide places to spot small marine life, including crabs and fish.

Tide timing determines when you can walk to and from the island. Check the tide chart before leaving Guernsey, and plan to cross back while the causeway is still accessible. There is no boat needed for the crossing when the causeway is exposed.

Ruins, shore and wildlife

Lihou
Lihou

The island’s remains include a 12th-century priory and old fish traps. A coastal walk takes in rocky outcrops, shingle beaches and tidal pools, with views over Rocquaine Bay. The Venus Pool is a deep natural rock pool where visitors can swim; the water is bracing.

Lihou and the surrounding area are a nature reserve. Seabirds nest there during the breeding season, when some parts of the island are roped off. The island has no facilities, so bring supplies with you. Footwear suited to wet ground is useful, and the terrain makes buggies impractical. Dogs are not permitted on Lihou or the causeway.
