Em resumo

Choose Hualien for Taroko, Qingshui Cliff and a city with trains and restaurants. Choose Taitung for hot springs, beaches, the Rift Valley tea hills and ferries to Green Island and Orchid Island. With four days or more, use both: the coast road between them has the best scenery, and each city has its own airport.

The short answer: gorge or hot springs and islands

Eastern Taiwan has two natural bases, and the question behind most searches is which one deserves the nights. Hualien in the north is the base for Taroko Gorge and the cliff-edge coast road. Taitung in the south is the base for hot springs, beaches, the tea hills of the Rift Valley and the ferries and flights to two offshore islands. The Hualien travel guide and the Taitung travel guide cover each. For the whole island, the Taiwan guide shows how the east coast fits.

If you want one base for three days, choose Hualien if Taroko is the point and Taitung if it is not. With four days or more, use both, because the coast between them is among the best stretches of scenery on the island and each end has its own airport.

Read the table as a trade between one famous attraction and a wider spread of smaller ones. Hualien's pull is concentrated in Taroko, where access is partial after the 2024 earthquake, as Taroko Gorge from Hualien explains. Taitung's pull is scattered along the coast and valley, so it rewards a longer, slower stay.

What you actually see in each place

In the Hualien area, the Taroko National Park lists reopened sites near the visitor center and marks others closed. North of the park, the Tourism Administration describes Qingshui Cliff, on the Suao-Hualien Highway, as a cliff more than 1,000 meters high that drops almost vertically into the sea. South of the city, the East Coast National Scenic Area stretches 170 kilometers from the Hualien River mouth to Xiaoyeliu, and Shitiping, at the 65-kilometer point of the coastal highway, is described as a shoreline of uplifted volcanic-tuff steps with a visitor center and a campground. Inland, Ruisui in the Rift Valley has a hot spring that emerges at 48 degrees Celsius and is described as the only carbonate hot spring in Taiwan, and the Xiuguluan River offers the island's most popular rafting course, with rafters especially numerous from May to October.

In the Taitung area, the attractions are mostly outdoors and spread out. Zhiben Hot Springs are described by the Tourism Administration as the greatest scene in eastern Taiwan, with an inner area of five-star resorts. Shanyuan Beach lies 12 kilometers north of Taitung City, a 1.5-kilometer sandy beach with coral reefs at both ends. Luye Recreational Tea Farm is called the best tea-growing area in the East Rift Valley, with a paragliding base 150 meters above the plain. Stone Umbrella, a rock spit about one kilometer long, sits at the 105.8-kilometer mark of Highway 11. The National Museum of Prehistory and Beinan Site Park, Taiwan's first archaeological site park, opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00, and is closed on Mondays.

The East Coast National Scenic Area lists Sanxiantai, Fugang Geopark at Xiaoyeliu, Jinzun, Jialulan and Donghe Bridge as places to go in Taitung, and Highway 11 links them. The two areas therefore join up: the same scenic area runs along both coasts, so a drive south from Hualien becomes a drive through Taitung's best stops.

Islands: Green Island and Orchid Island

The biggest difference between the two bases is the islands. The Tourism Administration's marine transport page lists the boat from Taitung Fugang to Green Island at 50 minutes, and to Orchid Island at 2 to 2.5 hours, and warns that not all routes run every day because of weather and traffic conditions. Taitung Airport also has flights to both islands, per the domestic flights page.

Green Island is described as a snorkelers' paradise, with a 16.3-kilometer round-island highway linking the lighthouse, rock formations and a rare saltwater hot spring that is popular for night bathing. Orchid Island is a volcanic island with a rain-forest interior and coral reefs. Both are better with a night than a day trip, and both depend on the weather, so keep a spare day. The marine transport page lists no island ferries from Hualien, which is the strongest reason to choose Taitung if islands matter to you.

Flights, trains and getting around

Both cities have a domestic airport. The Tourism Administration lists Hualien Airport, in Xincheng Township, with flights to Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, and Taitung Airport with flights to Taipei, Green Island and Orchid Island. Flights are often fully booked on weekends and holidays, so book early. The high-speed rail line serves the west coast only, so on the ground the link is Taiwan Railways along the east coast and the Rift Valley, plus the coast road.

For a trip without a car, the picture differs. In Hualien, the park lists bus 310 and bus 302 to the Taroko Visitor Center. In Taitung, the Tourism Administration says the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle East Coast Line runs from the airport to places such as the Taitung Sugar Factory, Taitung Train Station and Fugang Fishing Harbor, and a Dingdong Bus serves the city center. The coast and the valley are easier with a car, scooter or tour. If you drive, GOV.UK says UK license holders need a validated 1949 international driving permit, explained in the international driving permit guide.

Using both: a four-day shape

The best use of the east coast is one trip with two bases. Spend two nights in Hualien for Taroko's open sites and Qingshui Cliff, then travel south by rail or along the coast, with a stop at Shitiping or in the Rift Valley, and spend two nights in Taitung for the hot springs and the coast. Reverse it if you plan to fly out of Taitung. The order matters for flights: choose the end where your flight lands and the end where it leaves, since the two airports serve different cities.

If you have only three days, use the airports more cleverly. Fly into Hualien, spend two nights there and one in Taitung, and leave from Taitung Airport. Open-jaw tickets, flying in at one end and out at the other, save a day of backtracking. For where to stay in the north, see where to stay in Hualien, and for the wider region, the Eastern Taiwan and Taroko guide.

Which base for which traveler?

Hikers and scenery seekers should choose Hualien, where the gorge, the cliff road and the coastal terraces are all within a day of the city. Travelers who want to soak should choose Taitung: Zhiben has resort-style hot springs, and the Rift Valley has Ruisui and Antong springs on the Hualien side, described by the Tourism Administration as two of the valley's three best-known spas along with Hongye. Beach and water-sports fans should choose Taitung for Shanyuan Beach and the island boats.

Families with young children should choose Hualien for the short, easy trails near the Taroko Visitor Center and a city with plenty of restaurants, or Taitung for beaches. Couples on a slow trip suit Taitung, where the pace is looser and there is room for a night in a hot spring hotel. Travelers on a tight schedule should choose Hualien, because buses reach the gorge entrance without a car, while Taitung's best stops reward a vehicle and extra time.

Budget travelers should compare room rates in both cities for their own dates, and add the cost of transport: a car or scooter in Taitung changes the total more than the price of the bed. Photographers will find more variety in Taitung's coastline and more drama in Hualien's cliffs and gorge.

Weather and season

The east coast is exposed to typhoons. GOV.UK says the season normally runs from May to November, with road blockages and landslides a risk after storms, and the Tourism Administration says boats to the islands do not run on every day because of weather. That makes the cooler months of March, April, October and November the safer choice for a trip that depends on ferries, flights and coast roads. In summer, build spare days into any plan that includes the islands, and keep a flexible booking for flights and ferries.

Who should skip each base

Skip Hualien if Taroko's partial closures matter to you and you will not enjoy the coast and valley instead. Skip Taitung if you want one big sight, or if you do not want to rely on a car or on weather-dependent boats. If you have only two days, choose one base rather than splitting them, since each transfer costs half a day.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is assuming the two cities are a short hop. Check the Taiwan Railways timetable and allow for the transfer. The second is booking an island ferry without a spare day. The third is booking Taroko and island days back to back with no buffer. The fourth is relying on a single source for Taroko status: the park's pages change. The last is skipping basics: GOV.UK says UK passport holders can enter visa-free for up to 90 days and must file a Taiwan Arrival Card online within three days before arrival.

Set up data before you go with the eSIM guide, and cover delays and weather with travel insurance. For rail and flight options across the island, see getting around Taiwan.

Perguntas frequentes

Is Hualien or Taitung better for a first trip to eastern Taiwan?

Hualien for Taroko and Qingshui Cliff, which draw most first-time visitors. Taitung if you prefer hot springs, beaches and islands to a gorge, or if Taroko's partial closures put you off. Both lie on the same coast and rail line.

Can you visit Hualien and Taitung in one trip?

Yes. They are linked by Taiwan Railways, by the Rift Valley and by the coast road, and each has a domestic airport. Four days is a comfortable minimum, with two nights in each. Check the Taiwan Railways timetable for the journey between them.

How do you reach Taitung?

By Taiwan Railways, or by a domestic flight. The Tourism Administration lists Taitung Airport with flights from Taipei, plus flights to Green Island and Orchid Island. From the airport, a Dingdong Bus and the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle East Coast Line serve the city and coast.

How do you get to Green Island from Taitung?

By boat from Fugang, about 50 minutes according to the Tourism Administration, or by flight from Taitung Airport. Not all boat routes run every day because of weather, so call the operator before fixing a schedule.

Which base is better without a car?

Hualien, for Taroko, since buses 310 and 302 reach the visitor center. Taitung has the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle East Coast Line from the airport, but most of the coast and Rift Valley is easier with a car, scooter or tour. Check the IDP rule if you drive.
