Victoria Park - Nuwara Eliya

Victoria Park sits in the centre of Nuwara Eliya, a hill town in Sri Lanka's Hill Country.

Victoria Park sits in the centre of Nuwara Eliya, a hill town in Sri Lanka's Hill Country. It was laid out in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and the 27-acre park has lawns, shaded paths, flower beds and tall trees, including a stand of eucalyptus. It is a calm place for a slow walk, a picnic or a rest on a bench, and a good stop for families with children. Spring is the strongest season for flowers.

Why the park was made

The park was named for Queen Victoria and laid out in 1897 to mark her Diamond Jubilee. Before that, the land was used as a research field for the Hakgala Botanical Garden, which lies about 4 km from the town centre.

Nuwara Eliya drew British settlers in the 19th century because its cooler climate offered relief from the tropical heat. The park reflects that period, and a small museum on the British era is one of the sights for visitors who want more context.

The first tree planted here is said to have been an oak, set down by a German princess who visited the town in the late 19th century.

Gardens and trees

The park covers 27 acres of lawns, flower beds, shaded paths and foreign trees. A cluster of very tall eucalyptus trees is one of its main features.

Rose gardens, small ponds and lakes, shady gazebos and fountains add variety to the layout. Some plants carry signs that name them, so the park works as a small botanical garden as well as a town park.

Along the paths, topiary shaped like rabbits and elephants stands among the trimmed plants.

Birds in and around the park

Birdwatchers have recorded Sri Lanka white-eye, the endemic yellow-eared bulbul, Indian pitta and scimitar babbler in the park. Migrant birds such as the Indian blue robin, pied thrush and velvet nuthatch also appear.

Galway's Land, a national park nearby, is also a birding site. Horton Plains National Park is about 1.5 hours from Nuwara Eliya by road.

Visiting with children

The park has a playground and a small toy train that runs through the grounds, so families can split a visit between play and a slow walk.

Lake Gregory is nearby, where pony rides, kite flying and paddle boats are on offer. Early morning is the quietest time for a walk in the park.
