Portal de ses Taules

Portal de ses Taules is the principal entrance to Dalt Vila, Ibiza’s fortified old town, near the Old Market and La Marina.

Portal de ses Taules is the principal entrance to Dalt Vila, Ibiza’s fortified old town, near the Old Market and La Marina. Cross the stone bridge beneath the gateway’s imperial coat of arms and statues, then continue through the Patio de Armas towards Plaza de Vila, with its shops and restaurants. From there, explore the narrow cobbled lanes, historic buildings and ramparts inside the 16th-century walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The climb is steep in places, but the upper town’s views reach across Ibiza.

A gateway into Dalt Vila

Portal de ses Taules stands beside the Old Market, between the bastions of Sant Joan and Santa Llúcia. It is the main entrance to Dalt Vila, Ibiza’s upper town, and one of five principal gates in the old defences. The gateway was built between 1584 and 1585, when the town’s walls were constructed under the reign of Charles V.

The approach crosses a stone bridge over the former moat. The gate is crowned by an imperial coat of arms and crown; replicas of the original statues flank it. The originals are kept in the Archaeological Museum. The crossing has changed over time: wooden slats spanned the moat in the 19th century, followed by a drawbridge and, in the early 20th century, a permanent bridge.

From the Patio de Armas to the ramparts

Passing through the gate brings you to the Patio de Armas, then on to Plaza de Vila, a central square in the historic quarter. Restaurants and shops line the way, including stores selling handmade products. The lanes beyond are narrow and cobbled, with whitewashed houses, historic buildings and routes that climb towards the upper town.

Dalt Vila rises towards the cathedral and the Almudaina, a complex joined to the castle. Its walls and ramparts are part of the UNESCO-listed historic site. The fortified position also reflects the town’s exposure to raids and attacks: the thick stone defences protected this strategic settlement. Walking along the ramparts brings views over Ibiza and the sea.

Planning a walk through the old town

Allow for a steady climb as you move from the lower town towards the higher parts of Dalt Vila. The steep sections and uneven paving can make the route difficult for anyone with limited mobility. Comfortable shoes help on the cobbles, and a map from a tourist information centre can make it easier to locate the main sights among the winding streets.

The cathedral, City Hall, the Almudaina and the bastions are among the landmarks to look for inside the walls. Church access follows its own schedule, so check times before setting out if you want to go inside. The gateway itself is accessible around the clock, but that does not mean every attraction along the route is open at all times.
