About 8 kilometres west of Córdoba, Medina Azahara is the remains of a 10th-century palace city built by Caliph Abd ar-Rahman III. The hillside site gives you a sense of the complex’s scale, with stone arches, walls and the remains of grand buildings on the levels once occupied by the caliph’s palace. Start at the museum, where exhibits and a short film explain the history, then take the shuttle bus to the ruins. Much of the city remains unexcavated, so the visit combines visible remains with a museum’s context.
A palace city outside Córdoba

Caliph Abd ar-Rahman III began building Medina Azahara in the 10th century, after declaring himself caliph. The palace city stood about 8 kilometres west of Córdoba and expressed the authority of the Umayyad ruler. It served as the capital, with administrative duties carried out there.
The complex spread across a hillside. The caliph’s palace occupied the upper levels, overlooking gardens and open ground. Residential areas lay to the sides, but much of the city has not been excavated. The site you can visit is therefore only part of the original settlement.
Start at the museum, then visit the ruins

The museum sits below the archaeological site. Its exhibits and a short film provide context before you walk among the remains. Stone arches, old walls and the traces of large buildings help convey the scale of the palace city; information boards explain what you are seeing.
After the museum, a shuttle bus takes visitors up to the ruins. The archaeological site is not reachable by private car, so plan on using the shuttle for the journey there and back. Keep your ticket for the return trip. The ruins are exposed to the sun, with little shade, so cooler hours are more comfortable in summer.
