San Sebastià Beach is a long city beach in Barcelona, near the W Barcelona and within walking distance of La Rambla. Its open Mediterranean views and relaxed feel make it a good place to swim, exercise or take a seaside walk. The sand gives way to some pebbles at the water’s edge, where the seabed slopes gradually. Showers, toilets and beach bars are available, and the promenade has places to eat after a sunset stroll.

A beach with room to walk

San Sebastià is one of Barcelona’s oldest beaches and lies at the city’s southern end. It is a long stretch of coast, with the W Barcelona at one end and a promenade beside the sand. Follow the waterfront for open views across the Mediterranean, or settle in for a swim and a few hours by the sea.

The beach is sandy, though pebbles can appear where you enter the water. The seabed deepens gradually. In summer, especially at weekends, the sand gets busy, so a winter visit suits a quieter seaside walk or a slower break by the water.

Swimming, exercise and access

The promenade and beach draw people for more than sunbathing. Outdoor fitness bars provide space for calisthenics and workouts, and water-sports clubs are located nearby. Showers and toilets are available, along with beach bars, though some facilities may be out of order.

San Sebastià is known as a nudist beach. It is also noted as a beach suited to people with limited mobility, with volunteers available to help people access the water. If you plan to swim, be alert to occasional jellyfish sightings.

After the beach

The boardwalk has tapas bars for an easy meal after a walk or a sunset drink. Street sellers also move along the sand offering items such as towels, blankets, parasols and drinks; some can be persistent, so a clear, brief refusal can help you get back to your time on the beach.
