Work began in the late 14th century, and the building was rebuilt and repaired many times over the following centuries. It is dedicated to Saint Elisabeth of Hungary.

The most ornamented entrance is the north portal, not the west or south. Its tympanum shows people arriving at the gates of heaven, the Last Judgment and Christ on the cross.

The interior holds Gothic panel paintings, altar paintings and the crypt of Francis II Rákóczi. A double spiral staircase is one of the building's notable features.

The stained glass windows are tall, and the light changes through the day, so the inside looks different at different hours. The cathedral has room for around 5,000 people.

Outside, the roof is covered in colourful tiles, which are easy to see from the square.

Climbing the Sigismund Tower

The tower is about 60 metres tall. Climbing it costs 2 euros per person.

The stone stairwell is narrow, and the climb ends with views over the city and the surrounding countryside. Visitors can ring the bell at the top. Wire mesh in places can block some of the view, so look past it from different sides of the platform.

A church in daily use

The cathedral is a working church. It is used for Mass and for weddings, funerals and other ceremonies. Visiting during a service lets you see the building in use. In that case, keep your voice low, move quietly and dress modestly.
