The Glasgow School of Art, at 167 Renfrew Street, is an art and design school best known for the Mackintosh Building, Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s landmark design. Its restrained Art Nouveau details combine Japanese and Scottish influences. Fires in 2014 and 2018 badly damaged the building, and restoration has been a lengthy process, so access can change. The Glasgow School of Art began in 1845 as the Glasgow Government School of Design. It took the name Glasgow School of Art in 1853 and was first based on Ingram Street, near Merchant City. As the school grew, it moved to Renfrew Street.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh, an alumnus of the school, won the competition to design its new building. The work was completed in stages, with the first phase finished in 1899 and the second in 1909. The result became his best-known architectural work and an enduring part of Glasgow’s identity.

The Mackintosh Building brings together Art Nouveau, Japanese influences and traditional Scottish decorative elements. Its effect comes in part from restraint: rather than covering every surface with ornament, Mackintosh used carefully chosen details. The building’s design helped establish the Glasgow style associated with him.

Mackintosh’s work extended beyond architecture to interiors and furniture. When tours are available, visitors may see a gallery of his furniture alongside an exterior-focused visit. The tour is led by art students, who discuss Mackintosh and the school’s story.

Fire damage and visiting

The building was badly damaged by fires in 2014 and 2018. The 2014 fire destroyed the Mackintosh Library, and the later blaze damaged reconstructed interiors. Restoration has been a long process, and visitor access has changed during the work.

Do not plan around entering the Mackintosh Building without checking first. The school’s website is the place to confirm whether tours have resumed and what they include. Nearby, the Willow Tea Rooms provide another way to explore Mackintosh’s design work in Glasgow.
