Em resumo

Take the train from Amsterdam, walk the Grote Markt and St Bavo's in the morning, then choose one museum: Teylers for science and art, Frans Hals for Golden Age portraits. Spend the afternoon on the Spaarne and the courtyards, and avoid Mondays, when both big museums are closed. Pay for the train with a contactless card.

Haarlem as a day trip at a glance

Haarlem is the easiest culture-focused escape from Amsterdam: a compact old town of canals, almshouse courtyards and a market square, reached by NS train. The Haarlem travel guide explains the setting. If you build a longer trip, the Netherlands guide shows how Haarlem fits with Amsterdam, Leiden and The Hague.

The plan assumes a Tuesday to Sunday day. Both of Haarlem's main museums list those opening days, so a Monday trip needs the swap near the end of this page. It also assumes you want one museum, not two, and that you would like to eat a long lunch rather than sprint. If you only have half a day, take the morning block and the Spaarne walk and skip the museum.

Haarlem's own tourism site describes the city as one that welcomes visitors throughout the week, not just on weekends, and lists the Great or St Bavo Church, Teylers Museum, Anno Haarlem, the shopping streets, canal boat tours and city walks as the main things to do. That list makes a good frame for the day: church and square in the morning, one museum, then water and courtyards.

Getting to Haarlem by train

The simplest route is the NS train from Amsterdam Centraal. Check the route and the time on 9292.nl for your date, because services change by day and by planned works. The station sits near the old center, so you can walk in without a bus. NS accepts foreign contactless cards for check-in and check-out, and the Netherlands guide lists which ones, so there is no need for a paper ticket.

Checking out is mandatory: if you cannot check out, NS debits a correction fee that you reclaim on the OVpay website afterwards. Tap in at Amsterdam, tap out at Haarlem, and repeat both on the way back. Bicycle hire exists in Haarlem according to the tourism site, but the old center is small enough that you do not need one for this plan.

If you are staying outside Amsterdam, for example in Utrecht, check 9292.nl for the route and allow more time. If you arrive late from Schiphol, leave Haarlem for the next day rather than forcing a half-day.

Morning: the Grote Markt and St Bavo's

Arrive early and walk straight to the Grote Markt, the main square of Haarlem. It is a short walk from the station, past shops and lanes, and the square holds the town hall, cafes with terraces and the Great or St Bavo Church. The church is the visual anchor of the center, and the square is the best place to orient yourself. Check the church's current visiting hours and ticket rules on the Visit Haarlem site, since church openings can change around services and events.

Anno Haarlem is the city's visitor center, located in the City Hall, according to the tourism site. It is a good first stop if you want maps, a short introduction to the town's history or help with museum tickets. The VVV Haarlem tourist information office offers maps, brochures and museum tickets, so you can sort ticketing there if you did not book ahead.

Take a short loop through the Golden Streets, the shopping district the tourism site describes, and the lanes leading toward the Spaarne river. Browse, stop for a coffee, and keep the larger decisions, museum and lunch, for the next block. If you arrive on a Saturday, expect the center to be busy, because the shops and the market draw visitors from the surrounding area.

Lunch and the choice of museum

Lunch on the Grote Markt is the easy option, with terraces in good weather and small restaurants in the lanes behind. Prices on the main square are usually higher than a few streets back, so walk five minutes if you want a simpler meal. In winter many people eat inside, and the Christmas market, listed among Haarlem's seasonal events, changes the character of the square in December.

For the museum, choose one. The Frans Hals Museum, at Groot Heiligland 62, is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00 and is the pick for Dutch Golden Age portraits. It has audio tours, a cafe and a shop. Teylers Museum, at Spaarne 16, is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 and is closed on Mondays; the museum describes itself as the oldest in the Netherlands, founded in 1784, with art, scientific instruments and natural history. Frans Hals or Teylers Museum explains the decision in detail, and for most day trippers one of the two is enough.

Afternoon: the museum, the Spaarne and the courtyards

Allow about two hours for the museum, and decide whether to go in the early afternoon or right at opening. Teylers opens at 10:00, so a morning visit is possible if you take an early train and skip the square. The Frans Hals Museum opens at 11:00, which suits a slower start. If you choose Teylers in the morning and the Frans Hals Museum afterwards, you can see both, but the day becomes a museum day, and the canal walk shrinks.

After the museum, walk along the Spaarne, the river that runs through the center and past Teylers. The riverbank has quays, historic buildings and cafes, and it is the best place to slow down. Canal boat tours, listed on the Visit Haarlem site, are a good option if your feet are tired; pick a dry slot and book through the operator you choose. The old almshouse courtyards in the center are quiet corners, and the tourism site's historic walking routes help you find them.

If you still have energy, ask the tourist office for a walking route or join a city walk, which the tourism site lists. Late afternoon light on the Grote Markt is a pleasant way to finish, and the cafes serve until the evening. The return train leaves frequently, so there is no need to rush for a specific departure, but check the last services on 9292.nl if you plan a late dinner.

Adding the beach or the tulips

The Haarlem tourism site says the beach is just around the corner, which makes a seaside afternoon possible in good weather. Check the bus and train options on 9292.nl for your date, and keep the beach for a clear day; in cold or wet weather the museum is a better use of the time. A beach add-on turns the day into a long one, so drop the second museum and the boat tour if you add it.

In spring the bulb region around Lisse comes into play. Keukenhof is open from Thursday 18 March to Sunday 9 May in 2027, 8:00 to 19:00, according to the Keukenhof site, and tickets are bought on the park's own site. Haarlem sits near the northern end of the bulb region, and the South Holland and Zeeland planner explains how Keukenhof, Kinderdijk and the Delta coast fit together. Do not try to combine Keukenhof and Haarlem's museums in one day; each needs a half day on its own.

Monday and rain: what to swap

On a Monday, both Teylers and the Frans Hals Museum are closed, so the museum block moves to another day or becomes something else. Use the Monday for the church, a canal boat tour, the Golden Streets and a long lunch. If you have a free choice of day, travel Tuesday to Sunday.

In rain, the museums carry the day. Teylers and the Frans Hals Museum are both indoors, and the VVV office can help you pick. Keep the Spaarne walk and the boat tour for a drier hour, and carry a light waterproof, because the wind off the sea can turn showers quickly. Haarlem also works well for a longer lunch under cover, with cafes lining the square.

Who should not do Haarlem as a day trip

If you have only one day in the Netherlands, spend it in Amsterdam. Haarlem is worth the train when you have at least three days and want a calmer day out. If you are traveling with someone who dislikes museums, plan around the square, the canal and the beach, and leave the museums out. If you rely on a wheelchair or stroller, check the accessibility information of each museum and the cobbled streets on the tourism site before you commit.

Day trippers who want a long evening in the old town should sleep in Haarlem, not return. Haarlem or Amsterdam: where to stay covers when a night is worth it.

Mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is going on a Monday with a museum plan. The second is trying to see both museums plus the beach in one day, which leaves each with a rushed hour. The third is forgetting to tap out at the station, which charges the wrong fare. The fourth is eating on the main square without a menu check; a few streets back are cheaper. The fifth is leaving ticket buying until you arrive, when a timed slot can run out on a busy weekend.

Set up your phone before you travel. An eSIM for Europe gives you data for maps, rail times and ticket codes, and travel insurance covers cancellations and medical care. Coming from outside Europe? The EES booth is at your first Schengen entry, not in Haarlem; EES explained covers it, and the visa checker covers your passport.
