The Catedral Basílica de Zacatecas stands on the south side of the Plaza de Armas, at Avenida Hidalgo 617, and is the main church of the Diocese of Zacatecas. It is dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption. The facade is carved in pink stone with angels, plant motifs and columns in groups of three, in the local style known as Zacatecan baroque. Inside, the main altarpiece is covered in 24-karat gold leaf. The cathedral is still a place of worship, so you can sit quietly during Mass or simply look up at the stonework.
Building the cathedral

Construction began around 1729. The main portal was finished in 1745, and the church was opened for worship in 1752. The building was not fully completed until 1904.
The cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption and is the principal church of the Diocese of Zacatecas. Miners from the area did much of the building work, which suits a city whose wealth came from silver.
Three facades in pink stone

The cathedral has three facades, and the main one is the most elaborate. It is dedicated to the Eucharist. Its three levels are held up by columns in groups of three, surrounded by dense carving. This exuberant style is called Zacatecan baroque, a name that points to how distinct it is from baroque elsewhere in Mexico.
The whole front is cut from pink stone, worked into patterns like lace. Look for angels, plant motifs and carved figures. European decorative ideas sit next to local ones, which gives the facade its character.
The afternoon sun, roughly from 2 to 6 pm, lights the main facade from the side and makes the relief stand out.
Inside: three naves and the golden altarpiece
The interior has three naves. The main altarpiece is the focus. It weighs about 20 tons and is covered in 24-karat gold leaf. It was inaugurated in 2010 and made by Javier Marín. It holds statues of 11 important saints, among them the Virgin of the Assumption.
The gold is the detail most people remember from the inside, set against a quiet space where people come to pray and attend Mass.
