Em resumo

Spend day one walking the UNESCO-listed Old Town from Cathedral Square to Gediminas' Tower, the Palace of the Grand Dukes and Užupis. Spend day two on one or two history museums, a viewpoint and a park. Swap the days if rain is forecast, and add Trakai by train as a third day only in dry weather.

Vilnius in 2 days: the plan at a glance

Two days is the right length for a first visit to the capital. The Vilnius travel guide lists what the city offers, and the Lithuania guide covers the rest of Lithuania. Day one belongs to the outdoors: Cathedral Square, the castle hill, Pilies Street, the university quarter and an evening in Užupis. Day two belongs to rooms with a roof: pick one or two history museums, add a viewpoint and finish in a park or at a table.

The shape follows the geography. UNESCO describes the Vilnius Historic Centre as a property of 352 hectares with a radial medieval street plan that grew out from the castle site, so the sights bunch together instead of lying along one axis. Go Vilnius makes the same point in its own words: the city is the biggest in the Baltics yet compact enough to explore on foot. A two-day plan can therefore skip transit almost entirely, apart from the arrival and one optional ride to the TV Tower.

Where to sleep decides how smooth the plan feels. If you have not booked yet, where to stay in Vilnius compares four bases. The plan below assumes the Old Town or the station area, both within walking distance of Cathedral Square.

Day 1: Old Town, castle hill and Užupis

Start at Cathedral Square, early. UNESCO notes that the square covers the foundations of the Lower Castle, demolished after the third partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795, which gives the open space more history than its calm look suggests. From here climb to Gediminas' Tower. Go Vilnius describes it as a remnant of the Upper Castle dating to the 14th century, with panoramic views and an exhibition on the Grand Duchy. The climb is short but steep, so wear shoes with grip, and start with the tower so you see the city layout before you walk it.

Come back down toward the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. Go Vilnius says that in the 15th and 16th centuries and the first half of the 17th century the palace was a political, diplomatic, administrative and cultural center of the Grand Duchy, and the restored building now holds a museum. Give it a generous block of time, because it is one of the best ways to understand why Vilnius matters. The Old Arsenal nearby shows the exhibition Prehistory of Lithuania, with more than 4,000 archaeological finds, if you want a deeper layer.

For the middle of the day follow Pilies Street, the old route toward the university quarter. UNESCO names the 16th-century university ensemble, the Town Hall with its square and churches of many faiths among the property's key attributes, and the Vilnius Baroque style that spread through the Grand Duchy. St. John's Church and its campanile are here, and Go Vilnius says the campanile has 193 wooden steps and a bird's-eye view of the Old Town. Treat the climb as optional if you have already been up Gediminas' Tower.

Lunch can be anywhere on or beside Pilies Street, and a side lane is a calmer choice than the main square. In the afternoon cross the Vilnelė into Užupis, the smallest district of Vilnius at 0.6 square kilometers according to Go Vilnius. Walk the lanes, find the Subačius viewpoint, which the city lists as having the most beautiful view of Užupis, and look into the Centre for Wooden Architecture. It is a place for an unhurried hour, not a checklist.

End the day with dinner back in the Old Town. A dusk walk through Cathedral Square and the lit lanes is the reward for an early start. Go Vilnius says the city is safe for walking and cites a relatively low risk of robbery or scams, but FCDO notes that petty crime is common in Lithuania and that drink spiking has occurred in Vilnius, so keep a drink in sight and avoid unlit streets and parks late at night.

Day 2: museums and views

Day two is a choice, not a list. Vilnius has more history museums than two days can hold, and the interesting question is which story you want. Go Vilnius lists the Museum of Culture and Identity of Lithuanian Jews, the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights in the former KGB headquarters, the Lukiškės Prison guided tour, the Vilnius Museum at Vokiečių 6, the Radvila Palace Museum of Art, the MO Museum and many more. Pick one or two and give each real time.

A good split is one heavy museum in the morning and one lighter stop after lunch. If you choose the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights or the Lukiškės tour, follow it with a park walk rather than another dark subject. Go Vilnius lists Bernardine Garden, with riverside paths and fountains, and Vingis Park, popular for walking and cycling, as places to reset. The Vilnius University Botanical Garden, founded in 1781, is another calm option.

For a view, pick one. Go Vilnius lists the Hill of Three Crosses, the bastion of the defense wall, the cathedral bell tower and the Vilnius TV Tower, which it calls the tallest building in the country at 326 meters. The bastion and the Hill of Three Crosses are a walk from the center, while the TV Tower needs a ride. If you already climbed Gediminas' Tower on day one, skip the tower and go for the bastion or the hill at sunset.

Paneriai deserves a note. Go Vilnius lists a visitors information center at the Paneriai Memorial, the site of the largest mass murder organized and executed by the Nazis in Lithuania. It is a serious visit that needs a calm half day and a ride out of the center, so do not squeeze it between sights. Decide before you arrive whether you want it, and read the memorial's own information first.

If you will visit three or more paid sights in a short window, compare single tickets with the city card in Is the Vilnius Pass worth it?. For one or two sights, single tickets and a day transit ticket usually cost less than a pass.

A third day: Trakai or Kaunas

If you have a third day, Go Vilnius points to trains. It says you can take a train from Vilnius to Trakai, with its island castle, or to Kaunas, the country's second city, and its pages on tours list a guided Trakai tour from EUR 30 with an audio guide. Trakai is the easier half day because it is close and compact. Check the rail timetable on the day you travel, buy the ticket at the station or online, and carry a charged phone because Trafi and the rail operator's app both need data.

Kaunas needs more time. Its UNESCO-listed interwar modernist core and its Old Town fill a long day, and a night is better if you want the evening scene. The comparison of day trip and overnight is in Kaunas from Vilnius, and the Kaunas travel guide lists what to see. Kernavė, the UNESCO-listed archaeological site in the Neris valley, is another option for travelers with a car; check current transport before you plan around it.

Rain, winter and the off-season

Rain does little damage to this plan because the best content is indoors. Swap day one and day two, so you start with museums and keep the castle hill for a drier hour. The Palace of the Grand Dukes, the Museum of Culture and Identity of Lithuanian Jews and the Lukiškės Prison tour all work as bad-weather anchors. Pair them with a café stop in the Old Town and you have a full day without a long walk.

Winter changes the mood, not the plan. Go Vilnius promotes winter activities, a winter light festival in the heart of the season and, in December, the Christmas Market on Cathedral Square. Days are short, so start at the castle hill in the morning light and move indoors by mid-afternoon. A traditional Lithuanian bathhouse or a spa treatment, both listed by the city, fit well after a cold day. Wear boots with grip, because cobbles and the castle path can be slippery in frost.

Spring and summer add open-air options. Go Vilnius lists kayaking on the Neris, a city wave for surfing and hot-air balloon flights, and says the Pink Soup Festival turns the city pink as summer nears. Summer evenings are long, so the Užupis walk can run late. Autumn is quieter, with golden light in the parks and fewer groups on the lanes.

Getting around and practical notes

Walking covers almost everything. When you do ride, Go Vilnius recommends the Trafi app for routes, live schedules and tickets. The operator JUDU lists single tickets of 30 minutes at EUR 1.00 and 60 minutes at EUR 1.25, and a 24-hour ticket at EUR 7.50, so one or two rides do not justify a day ticket. You can also pay by contactless card on board, and a transfer between vehicles is free while a valid ticket runs.

For an early start, a taxi app is the sensible choice. Go Vilnius warns that unfair taxi fares are a known scam and recommends apps such as Uber or Bolt, so you see the price first. A data plan helps for all of this: see the Europe eSIM roundup. Emergency number 112 reaches English-speaking help, according to the city, and pharmacies mostly keep short hours with only a few open around the clock, so buy medicine before a late evening.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is climbing everything in one morning. Gediminas' Tower, the St. John's campanile and the TV Tower give similar views, so choose one or two. The second is treating the second day as a checklist; one deep museum beats four quick ones. The third is booking a dinner at the last minute in December, when the Christmas Market draws crowds. The fourth is carrying a heavy bag across cobbles; leave luggage at the hotel, and consider a base discussed in the where to stay guide.

The last mistake is forgetting the practical side of the trip home. FCDO says Entry/Exit System checks may take place before boarding when you depart by plane, so leave extra time. The explainer EES explained covers what happens, and travel insurance is worth arranging before you fly, for delays, theft and medical cover beyond a European health card.

Perguntas frequentes

Is 2 days enough for Vilnius?

Yes for the main sights. Two days cover the Old Town, Gediminas' Tower, the Palace of the Grand Dukes, Užupis and one or two museums. Add a third day for Trakai by train or a slower museum day.

What should you see first in Vilnius?

Start at Cathedral Square, then climb to Gediminas' Tower, a remnant of the 14th-century Upper Castle with city views. Do it early, before the squares fill, and walk down toward Pilies Street.

Is Vilnius walkable?

Very. Go Vilnius calls it compact enough to explore on foot, and the Old Town, castle hill and Užupis are all linked by short walks. Use a bus or trolleybus only for the stations, the TV Tower or tired legs.

What can you do in Vilnius when it rains?

Choose museums: the Palace of the Grand Dukes, the Museum of Culture and Identity of Lithuanian Jews, the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights or the Lukiškės Prison guided tour. Swap your outdoor day for a museum day.

Is Vilnius good in winter?

Yes, especially in December. Go Vilnius confirmed a Christmas Market in Cathedral Square from 28 November to 27 December 2026, and the city also lists a winter light festival. Days are short and cold, so keep indoor stops in the plan.
