Al Shaheed Park is Kuwait's largest urban park, laid out on Soor Street in Kuwait City to honour those who died fighting for Kuwait, including in the Gulf War. Botanical gardens, a lake, fountains, miniature models of Kuwaiti monuments and jogging paths run through it. Two museums, Habitat and Memorial, stand in the first phase. Entry is free, and the park is lit at night, when the city skyline shows beyond the trees. It suits a slow walk, a few hours among the museums, or an evening by the water.

A park built as a memorial

Al Shaheed Park
Al Shaheed Park

Al Shaheed Park was conceived by the late emir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, to honour those who died fighting for Kuwait, including in the Gulf War. The name means "martyr", and the memorial purpose shapes the whole site. Visitors tend to keep their voices low and walk at an unhurried pace.

The park opened in 2015 and has been built in phases, two of them complete so far. It forms part of the green belt around Kuwait City, the strip of open land planned after the old mud-brick city wall was taken down in 1959. Phase One is the part usually recommended for an introduction to Kuwait's heritage, thanks to its architecture, its art and its two museums.

The central memorial is the Martyr's Monument, a seven-metre glass sculpture raised to commemorate Kuwait's martyrs across its history. A golden monument stands in the Constitution Garden, also inside the park.

The Habitat and Memorial museums

The Habitat Museum is about Kuwait's natural environment. It covers the country's ecosystems, the desert environment and the birds that migrate through, and it explains the effects of pollution. Interactive learning stations and staged recreations of natural settings carry most of the content, which makes it easy to follow for children as well as adults.

The Memorial Museum, which some signs and sources call the Remembrance Museum, is dedicated to Kuwait's martyrs and the history behind the park. The two museums have different subjects but share one aim: to leave the world a better place.

The museums are not open all day. If you want to see them and still have light for the grounds, arrive in the late afternoon.

Gardens, water and architecture

The park is a mix of landscaped gardens and built structures. Several buildings, including the museums and the parking, are covered by green roofs. Around 55,000 square metres of roof planting make the project the largest green roof of its kind in the Arab world, and one of the largest anywhere.

On the ground you find botanical gardens, a lake, an amphitheatre, a visitor centre and outdoor sculptures. A section of the park shows miniature models of Kuwaiti monuments, with an old town and a new town in miniature. A bird sanctuary, a dancing fountain and several coffee shops and restaurants sit along the routes. Cultural events and performances are held here, including activities for National Day.

In a desert climate, the lawns, palms and trees stay green through regular watering. The park is cooler and fresher in the evening and early morning.

Walking, jogging and the evening visit

Walking and jogging paths cover more than 2 km, and the park opens at 5 AM, so runners and walkers are out before the heat. From the paths you see the towers of the city skyline. Kuwait Towers is an eight-minute drive away, which makes the park easy to combine with a city sightseeing day.

After dark the pathways and water features are lit. A short musical fountain show plays in the evening, reported to start at 7:30 pm and run for about five minutes. Seating areas around the fountains make it a calm place to stay for an hour or two.

The park keeps a quiet, orderly feel. Visitors dress modestly, as they would in any public place in Kuwait, and keep to the paths.
