Its calm grounds are a welcome pause while exploring this historic part of Tokyo, with a large seated bronze Buddha cast in 1690 as the main point of interest. English signposts explain the temple’s history. The temple is compact, and the main indoor Buddha hall is not open to visitors, so plan this as a short stop before continuing through Yanaka or the cemetery.

A temple in Yanaka

Tennōji Temple

Tennōji belongs to the Tendai school of Buddhism and is among the oldest temples in the Yanesen area. Its origins are traced to 1274, when it was founded by Nichigen, a Buddhist disciple. Today, the temple sits beside Yanaka Cemetery, close to Nippori Station’s south exit.

English signposts on the grounds explain the temple’s historical significance. They make it easier to understand the site as part of a walk through Yanaka, rather than simply stopping to look at the Buddha.

The bronze Buddha and the former pagoda

The temple’s best-known object is its seated bronze Buddha, made in 1690. The figure stands outdoors in the temple grounds; the main indoor Buddha hall is not open to visitors.

Tennōji also once had a five-tiered pagoda associated with Kōda Rohan’s novel of the same name. The pagoda burned down in 1957. Its remains are registered as a historical artifact of Tokyo, and the former pagoda site is part of the temple’s history.

Adding Tennōji to a Yanaka walk

The temple is a short walk from Nippori Station and marks the northern end of Yanaka Cemetery, making it a convenient starting point for exploring the area. From here, you can continue through the cemetery or head toward Yanaka Ginza. Nezu Shrine is another nearby stop for a longer day in Yanesen.

Cherry blossom season brings flowers to the temple grounds. English explanations help put the site in context, while the compact layout keeps the visit straightforward. Set aside time for the outdoor Buddha and a walk around the grounds; the closed indoor hall means this is not a visit centered on entering the main building.
