From Nagano Station, take the Nagano Dentetsu limited express to Yudanaka (38 minutes), a bus to the park stop (15 minutes), then walk about 35 minutes on an unpaved path; a direct express bus from Nagano Station takes 41 minutes. The park is open all year, and the monkeys use the hot spring mostly from December to March. Date-specific online tickets have been sold since August 2026. Checked 3 Oct 2026.
The snow monkeys of Jigokudani live in a valley in the north of Nagano Prefecture, east of the city covered in the Nagano travel guide, and reaching them takes a train, a short bus and a forest walk. The route is simple once you know it, and it works as a day trip from Nagano and a long one from Tokyo.
This page covers the route, the hours and fees, the walk, and when to go. It also shows when an overnight near Yudanaka is worth it and when a guided tour makes more sense. If you are building a wider route through Japan, the Nagano stop pairs well with the Alps.
How do you get to the snow monkeys from Nagano?
The park's official access page gives two public transport routes from Nagano Station, and both end with the same walk. By train and bus, take the Nagano Dentetsu limited express to Yudanaka Station (38 minutes), then a bus to the Snow Monkey Park stop (15 minutes), then walk 35 minutes to the park. By express bus, the page lists a direct service from Nagano Station toward Shiga Kogen that reaches the Snow Monkey Park stop in 41 minutes, followed by the same 35-minute walk.
Which should you choose? The direct bus is simpler if the timetable fits your day, because there is one change fewer. The train and bus route gives you more departures to choose from. Either way, check the operator's current timetable on the day, because buses in a mountain valley run less often than city services, and the access page gives phone numbers for the train, bus and taxi operators.
The Nagano Dentetsu line is listed on the park's page separately from the JR Hokuriku Shinkansen, so treat it as a different operator when you think about rail passes. The JR Pass guide helps you work out whether a pass covers the long-distance part of your trip. In summer, the access page adds that you can take a taxi from Yudanaka station to the Jigokudani car park, which leaves a 15-minute walk.
From Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya
The park gives the long-distance legs too. From Tokyo, the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano is listed as fastest 79 minutes. From Shin-Osaka it lists the Thunderbird limited express to Tsuruga (76 minutes) and the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tsuruga to Nagano (1 hour 49 minutes). From Nagoya it lists the JR Chuo Line limited express to Nagano at 2 hours 43 minutes. Add the Yudanaka legs and the walk to those, and a day trip from Tokyo adds up to about 2 hours 50 minutes each way before any waiting, which is workable in summer and tight in winter, when the park closes at 4:00pm.
If you drive
Free parking is available at Kanbayashi Onsen, with a 30-minute walk to the park. The park also asks winter visitors not to drive: its notices say parking is limited and may fill up, that some car parks close during the New Year holidays and on weekends and public holidays from December to March, and that driving is hazardous when snow and ice make the roads and paths dangerous. Use public transport in winter.
Opening hours and entry fee
The park is open all year with no set closing days. From April to October it opens at 8:30am and closes at 5:00pm. From November to March the hours are 9:00am to 4:00pm. The park asks visitors to arrive at least 30 minutes before closing. It also says it may shorten the hours or close without notice because of weather, monkey behavior or natural disasters, so check the day's notice before you leave.
The park's official guide and the fee revision notice on its information page are the places to confirm the figures. There is no senior discount, and discounts cannot be combined. The guide page also still carries older text saying there is no advance ticket reservation, while the homepage and the online ticket page describe the newer system, so follow the newer notices.
Online tickets
The park announced date-specific online tickets on 30 April 2026 and launched them in early August 2026. The rules on its notice are short: all tickets are date-specific, they can be bought up to 3 months before the visit, and if you do not have an online ticket you may wait before entering, and depending on congestion visitors without online tickets may be denied entry. The homepage adds that during the winter season, from December through April, priority for entry is given to those who purchased tickets online. A bus-and-admission ticket from Nagano Station is also listed on the online ticket page.
The practical advice is simple: for any visit from December to April, buy the online ticket for a fixed date once your plans are firm, and treat it as part of your trip budget. For a summer visit, the park is quieter, but the same page applies if the crowd forecast calendar on the homepage shows a busy day.
The walk from the bus stop
The park's first-time visitor guide says you must walk about 30 minutes along an unpaved path from the parking lot or bus stop to the park, and the access page counts 35 minutes. The winter notice map shows about 1.6 km between the forest trail entrance and the park. For nature conservation there are no paved roads inside or outside the park, so no wheelchairs or carts can use the route, and the park asks guardians to keep hold of small children.
In winter, wear snow boots or similar. The guide recommends hiking shoes in summer and says to buy simple crampons in advance for a safer visit in winter. Bring gloves and a hat, because the valley is cold even when the walk warms you up. In summer, wear shoes you do not mind getting muddy and carry water. There are no facilities on the trail itself, so use the toilets before you go in.
The rules in the park are clear: observe the monkeys from a distance without upsetting or frightening them, photography is allowed but selfie sticks and other unorthodox methods are prohibited, pets of any kind are not allowed, and bathing with the monkeys is strictly prohibited. The park describes itself as a place to observe monkey ecology, not as a hot spring for people.
Winter or summer: when should you go?
The park's first-time guide is direct about timing: the snow monkeys use the park's hot spring baths from December to March, when the weather is coldest. They give birth in spring, when baby monkeys can sometimes be seen. Food sources are plentiful in the mountains in autumn, so the monkeys may not stop in at the park every day.
| Opção | What the park says | What it means for your trip |
|---|---|---|
| Dec to Mar | Monkeys use the hot spring baths to keep warm | The classic scene; also the coldest, icy trail, early closing and priority for online tickets |
| Spring | Baby monkeys can sometimes be seen | Fewer cold-weather problems; bathing is not the draw |
| Summer | Monkeys do not use the baths all year | Easier walking and longer hours; expect monkeys but not the bathing scene |
| Autumn | Food is plentiful in the mountains; appearances are sporadic | The riskiest season for seeing monkeys at all |

If the hot spring pool is the point of your trip, choose a date between December and March, book the online ticket, and keep a backup plan, since bathing depends on weather and on the animals. The park posts monkey appearance forecasts and daily updates on Facebook and X. Read them the evening before. For snow and shoulder-season detail across the country, see the guide to the best time to visit Japan.
Whenever you go, start early. The light is better, the trail is quieter, and the opening hours are short in winter.
What to wear and bring
Dress for the season and for a walk, not for a photo studio. In winter that means waterproof boots with grip, warm layers, gloves, a hat and the crampons the park suggests. In summer, bring water, sun protection and shoes that can take mud. A zoom lens helps, since you must keep your distance, and a phone is enough for most people.
Carry a card or an electronic money card. The park accepts credit cards and electronic money at the gate, and says QR and barcode payments cannot be used. The Money in Japan page explains where cash still matters outside the big cities.
Onsen towns nearby
The park's access page names Yudanaka station and Kanbayashi Onsen as the gateway points to the trail, and its winter notice map shows a hotel at the Kanbayashi Onsen end of the path. If you want to bathe yourself after the walk, remember that the monkeys' pool is not for people. A public or inn bath nearby is the place for that, and the onsen etiquette and tattoo rule guide explains the basics before you go.
An overnight in the valley also helps with timing, since the park's opening hours are short in winter and the latest bus back can end your day earlier than you expect. If you stay, check the last bus to the stop and to your inn before you go.
Day trip, guided tour or overnight?
From Nagano the trip is easy alone. A guided tour costs more but handles the bus and the timing, and is worth considering in deep winter. Staying overnight near Yudanaka gives you the park at opening and a ryokan dinner with an onsen bath.

For a Tokyo day trip, compare single shinkansen fares to Nagano with a pass before you buy. Add the Hokuriku line to Kanazawa and the sums change, so price the whole route first. The Kanazawa travel guide has the coastal end of that route.
What to book and what to skip
Book the online park ticket once you have a firm date, especially from December to April, and a room if you want the overnight. Skip the JR Pass if this is your only rail trip. If you want another mountain day in the Alps, the Kamikochi day trip is an option from Matsumoto, and its access season has its own dates, so check that guide before you plan around it. For a different mountain-and-village day in central Japan, the Takayama and Shirakawa-go day trip is the nearest comparison.
Common mistakes
The first is going in autumn and expecting bathing monkeys. The park says appearances are sporadic then. The second is turning up on a winter weekend without a ticket, or driving when the car parks are closed. The third is leaving too late: the winter closing time is 4:00pm and the park asks you to arrive 30 minutes before. The fourth is wearing city shoes on an unpaved, icy path. The fifth is planning around one visit day with no buffer; weather can delay buses and trains in winter, so a spare day is cheap insurance.

Perguntas frequentes
How do you get to Jigokudani Monkey Park from Nagano?
The park's access page gives two routes: the Nagano Dentetsu limited express from Nagano Station to Yudanaka (38 minutes), a bus (15 minutes) and a 35-minute walk; or an express bus from Nagano Station to the Snow Monkey Park stop (41 minutes) and the same walk.
Can you see the snow monkeys as a day trip from Tokyo?
Yes. The park lists the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano as fastest 79 minutes, then the limited express, bus and walk. Those legs add up to about 2 hours 50 minutes before any waiting, so allow more, and mind the early closing time in winter.
Is the snow monkey park open all year?
Yes. It runs 8:30am to 5:00pm from April to October and 9:00am to 4:00pm from November to March, with no set closing days. Weather, monkey behavior or a natural disaster can shorten the hours without notice. Arrive 30 minutes before closing at the latest.
Do the monkeys always bathe in the hot spring?
No. The park says the monkeys bathe to stave off winter cold, do not use the baths at all hours or all year, and may not show up at all on some days. Appearances are particularly sporadic in autumn. Bathing with the monkeys is prohibited.
Do I need to book a ticket for the snow monkey park?
Since August 2026 the park sells date-specific online tickets, up to 3 months ahead. Without one you may have to wait, and on crowded days you may be refused entry. From December to April, online ticket holders have priority.
Is the walk to the snow monkeys hard?
The park describes about 30 to 35 minutes on an unpaved path with no paved roads inside or outside the park. Wheelchairs and carts cannot use it. In winter the park advises snow boots and simple crampons.
