On Piazza San Zeno, west of Verona’s main sightseeing area, this basilica is one of northern Italy’s notable Romanesque churches. Its brick-and-stone façade has a large rose window, while the bronze doors depict biblical scenes. Inside, look for centuries-old frescoes, the crypt associated with Saint Zeno and Andrea Mantegna’s altarpiece. The church is also linked to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet: in the play, the lovers marry in its crypt. A cloister and gardens add a quiet space around the visit.

A Romanesque basilica in San Zeno

Church of Saint Zeno

The Church of Saint Zeno stands on Piazza San Zeno, away from the busiest central sights of Verona. Dedicated to the city’s patron saint, it is regarded as one of northern Italy’s important Romanesque churches. Its present form developed over several centuries, and the building combines Romanesque features with later Gothic elements.

Before entering, take in the façade’s alternating bands of brick and pale stone. The large circular rose window is known as the Wheel of Fortune. Its design includes figures arranged around the wheel, a reminder of the changing turns of human life. A separate bell tower rises beside the basilica.

The bronze doors and façade

The main doors are made of bronze panels created by more than one artist over the medieval period. Their reliefs show biblical episodes and events associated with Saint Zeno. Pause here to look closely at the scenes before moving inside; they are among the church’s most distinctive works.

The façade also has a marble porch, and the rose window sits above the entrance. Together, the stonework, brick and carved details make the exterior worth examining rather than treating it as a quick stop on the way in.

Frescoes, crypt and Mantegna’s altarpiece

Inside, the church unfolds across three levels, including the upper church, lower church and crypt. The crypt holds the tomb and relics associated with Saint Zeno. Its historic setting is also the place where Romeo and Juliet marry in Shakespeare’s play, a literary connection rather than an account of a real wedding.

Frescoes cover parts of the interior, including works from the 12th and 13th centuries. Some remain well preserved. Look, too, at the marble flooring and columns; ammonite fossils can be seen in some of the floor stones.

Near the main altar is Andrea Mantegna’s Renaissance triptych, depicting the Virgin and Christ Child among saints. The altarpiece is a central work in the basilica’s collection of sacred art and gives visitors another reason to look beyond the architecture.
