The Temple of Hera stands in the archaeological park of Paestum, in Campania. Locals and visitors also call it the Basilica. Dating to the sixth century BC, it is the oldest temple in the Paestum complex and one of the oldest Greek temples in the region. Its double rows of columns still survive, and its Archaic Doric design is easy to read up close. The larger Temple of Neptune stands beside it, so the two can be seen in one walk.
Paestum, the Greek city of Poseidonia

The Greeks founded the city around the seventh century BC and named it Poseidonia, after Poseidon, the god of the sea.
In the period from 400 to 273 BC, the Italic people of Lucania occupied the city. The Romans later added a forum, an amphitheatre, a sports ground and defensive walls that encircle the town for almost 5 km. Much of the wall is still largely intact. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Temple of Hera

The Temple of Hera is the oldest building in the Paestum complex. It is built in the Archaic Doric style, with nine columns on the front, while the later Temple of Neptune has six.
The temple was dedicated to Hera, queen of the gods, who is linked to marriage in one account of the site. The double rows of columns still stand, which gives a clear view of how the interior was arranged.
The building was later turned into a Catholic church, and the name Basilica has stuck to it.
Inside the park and the museum
From the south of the park, the Temple of Neptune and the Temple of Hera sit side by side. Further north, a third temple stands at the northern end of the park, and Roman remains lie between them.
The National Archaeological Museum of Paestum holds decorations from the temples and some of the most beautiful painted tombs in Campania. The Tomb of the Diver is among them, and its frescoes are kept in very good condition. Admission to the museum is included in the ticket for the park.
