Em resumo

Bari to Alberobello works as a day trip: the FS Sud Est regional train or bus takes roughly 1.5 hours each way, and a car is faster but needs parking and ZTL care. Leave early to see the trulli before the groups, check whether trains or replacement buses run on your date, and confirm the last return. Stay one night if you want the lanes quiet.

Train, car or tour: which should you pick?

Alberobello is roughly 1.5 hours from Bari by regional train or bus and about an hour by car, so it works as a day trip if you leave early. The choice comes down to whether you want to see only the town or also its neighbors in the Itria Valley. See also the Alberobello travel guide and the Italy guide.

The train is the simplest option for one town when it runs. The line, operated by FS Sud Est (the former Ferrovie del Sud Est), runs from Bari to Alberobello through the countryside, and the station is a short walk from the edge of the old town. A car is better if you want to add Locorotondo, Ostuni or the coast, and a tour suits you if you do not want to manage a timetable. For where to base in the city, see the Bari travel guide.

Whichever you choose, leave early. The trulli lanes are quiet before about 10am and crowded from late morning, so the best part of the day is the first part. For ideas on what to do once you are there, read things to do in Alberobello.

By train: FS Sud Est from Bari

The train leaves from the FS Sud Est platforms at Bari, and the journey takes roughly 1.5 hours. Trains are regional, with fewer services on weekends and holidays, so check the operator's timetable before you plan your return. The line passes through olive groves and small towns. A section of it was closed for years for double-tracking and electrification, and works on the stretch toward Martina Franca have used replacement buses in recent years, so confirm on the operator's site that trains, not buses, serve Alberobello on your date.

Buy a ticket through the operator's channels, and check whether it needs validating before you board. Rules for regional tickets differ by operator, so look at the page for your ticket type, and keep it until you leave the station at the other end. Trenitalia also sells a combined ticket called Trulli link, which pairs a regional train to Bari with an FS Sud Est bus from the terminal at Via Capruzzi to Alberobello, Locorotondo and Martina Franca; the Trenitalia page lists the bus leg at €5.20 to Martina Franca on top of the train fare. From Alberobello station, the old town and the Rione Monti trulli are a short walk, with signs pointing the way.

Take an early train so you reach the town by 9:30am or earlier. Check the last train back before you commit to a long lunch, because evening services thin out. If you miss it, a taxi to Bari is possible but costly, so plan a buffer of at least 30 minutes.

By car: faster, with a few traps

Driving from Bari takes about an hour on the main roads, and a car lets you add stops in the Itria Valley. The traps are parking and the limited traffic zones (ZTL) in the old towns, where cars without a permit are restricted. Park outside the historic center in a signed lot, and ask your hotel or the local tourist office exactly where to leave a car.

A rental car is worth it if you want to see more than one town in the day, or if you plan to continue south toward Ostuni and Lecce. It is not worth it if Alberobello is your only stop, because the train is cheaper and drops you close to the trulli. Book a car early for summer, and check the pickup and drop-off hours, since some offices close at lunch.

Fill up the tank before you enter the villages, because stations are fewer in the hills. Use a phone map, and check the road signs, since some small roads can be narrow with stone walls on both sides. Our guide to getting around Italy covers rental rules and licenses.

A plan for the day

Arrive by about 9:30am. Start in Rione Monti, the hillside district of white trulli, and walk to the viewpoint before the groups arrive. Then cross to the quieter Rione Aia Piccola, step inside one trullo or museum and stop for a coffee in the main square.

Have lunch away from the main lane, where menus are shorter and prices usually lower. Orecchiette with a tomato or turnip-green sauce is a good choice, and fresh burrata from the region is easy to find. After lunch, you have a few hours before the return train, which is enough for a second district walk, a cooking class or a short ride to a neighboring town.

If you want a guided walk, book a start time that matches your arrival, and ask about the meeting point. Tours often leave from the main lane and run about an hour. Compare a few before you book, and check the group size and language.

Add a stop on the way back

With a car, the easiest add-on is Locorotondo, a white hill town with a round old center and views over the valley. It is about 10 to 15 minutes from Alberobello and good for an hour or two. A longer drive takes you to Ostuni, known as the white city, which is about 45 minutes away and better kept for another day. See the Ostuni guide if you plan to sleep there.

On the coast, Polignano a Mare is about 45 minutes by car from Alberobello and has a cliff-edge old town and sea caves. It is a different mood from the trulli, and it can be crowded in summer. The Polignano a Mare guide has details, and a late-afternoon visit gives you the best light.

Without a car, pick one stop and do it well. Locorotondo is the next stop on the same line and a short ride from Alberobello, so it is the easy add-on by rail when trains run. Check the timetable before you go, since train spacing on this line is not frequent.

Or stay a night

If you can, stay one night in or near Alberobello. The town changes after the day-trip groups leave: lamps come on, the lanes are quiet and a late dinner is easy. A converted trullo is a draw, but check photos, air conditioning and the walk from parking, since some are small and dark.

A masseria in the countryside nearby is an alternative, with a pool, breakfast and a car-friendly setting. It suits travelers who want to combine the town with the valley without moving every day. Compare a few and read the access notes, since some are down unpaved roads.

Before you go, compare an eSIM for Italy for maps and train times, and travel insurance for missed trains and rental car excess. Pick your date with the best time to visit Italy in mind, since July and August are hot and crowded, and spring and autumn are the best balance.

What can go wrong

The most common problem is the return trip. Regional trains run less often in the evening and on Sundays, and a late lunch can turn into a missed connection. Screenshot the last train and set a phone alarm for 45 minutes before it, so you have time to walk to the station without rushing.

The second is heat. Summer afternoons in the lanes are hot, with little shade, so carry water, wear a hat and plan to rest in a café or a cool trullo interior at midday. Spring and autumn are more comfortable for walking, and the light is better for photographs.

The third is cash and small shops. Many places accept cards, but a few small shops and market stalls prefer cash, so carry a little for coffee or a snack. If anything goes wrong with a ticket, ask at the station or at the operator's desk, and keep your receipt until you are back in Bari.

From Bari airport

If you land at Bari airport, you do not need to go into the city first if you rent a car: pick it up at the airport and drive, roughly an hour on the main roads. Without a car, take a bus or train into Bari and then the regional train or bus on to Alberobello, which is a long first day after a flight. If you arrive late, sleep in Bari or in Alberobello, and do the trulli the next morning instead of rushing through them in the dark.

Train, bus or car: how to decide on the day

Take the train or bus if Alberobello is the only stop, you travel alone or as a pair, and you accept a timetable. Take a car if you want two or three stops, you are traveling with a group that makes a car cheaper, or you want to start before the first train. Take a tour if you want to skip the logistics and see the main sights with a guide, and you accept a fixed schedule. Whichever you pick, check the plan the evening before, not the morning of.

If the weather is poor, the best part of the day moves indoors: the interior of a trullo, a cooking class and a long lunch. The roofline view loses its point under low cloud, so postpone it to a dry hour. In the heat of July and August, leave Bari earlier and plan to rest at midday in a cool interior, rather than staying in the lanes at the hottest hours.

Who should not do this as a day trip

Skip the day trip if you are only passing through on a tight schedule, because the return train limits you. Skip it if you mind crowds and can only go at midday, or if you have limited mobility, since the lanes are steep and the stone is polished. If you have a car and one extra night, sleep in the valley and see the town early and late, which beats a rushed day.

Perguntas frequentes

How do you get from Bari to Alberobello?

By FS Sud Est regional train or bus in roughly 1.5 hours, by car in about an hour, or by a guided tour. The train station is a short walk from the old town. Works on parts of the line have used replacement buses, so check the operator for your date.

Is Alberobello a good day trip from Bari?

Yes, if you leave early. You can see the trulli districts, have lunch and still be back in Bari for dinner. It is a long day by train, so a car or a tour gives you more time in the town.

Do you need a car for Alberobello?

Not for the town. The train drops you close to the trulli, and the center is walkable. A car helps if you also want Locorotondo, Ostuni or the coast in the same day.

Can you combine Alberobello with Polignano a Mare?

Yes, but it is a lot for one day by train. A car makes it practical, with Alberobello in the morning and Polignano in the late afternoon. Otherwise, pick one and save the other for a second day.

What time should you leave Bari for Alberobello?

Take a train that reaches Alberobello before about 10am, so you see the trulli before the groups arrive. Check the timetable for the last train back, since services thin out in the evening.
