Torc Waterfall

Torc Waterfall sits in Killarney National Park, about 7 km from Killarney Town.

Torc Waterfall sits in Killarney National Park, about 7 km from Killarney Town. A short path of about 300 metres from the car park leads to the falls, which drop over mossy rock into a pool below. The woodland around them is lush, with moss-covered trees and large ferns, so the setting feels close to a rainforest. The water comes from a stream fed by the Devil's Punchbowl, and the flow is strongest after heavy rain. Take one of the loop trails for a longer walk, or climb the steep stone steps above the falls for views over the Lakes of Killarney.

The name and the folklore

The waterfall takes its name from the Irish word for wild boar, and the Irish name for the falls is also "Wild Boar". The mountain above the falls, Torc Mountain, carries the same name.

Local folklore centres on wild boars. One of the legends describes wild boars transforming into flames. The stories give the woods a sense of older tradition, and they are a good reason to read a little before you walk.

Where the water comes from

A stream flows down from the Devil's Punchbowl, a glacial lake on Mangerton Mountain, and feeds the falls. The water drops over mossy rocks into a pool below, and the sound carries through the trees.

Behind the falls, the mountains of MacGillycuddy's Reeks form a backdrop. From the higher steps, the view extends over the Lakes of Killarney.

Walking the trails

A path from the car park on the N71, the Killarney to Kenmare road, runs to the falls in about four to five minutes. Loop trails start from this area, marked in red, blue and yellow. The 3.7 km loop takes an average of 1 hour 17 minutes and is fairly challenging. It suits walking, hiking and trail running.

A public hike climbs from the waterfall to the top of Torc Mountain. The steps above the falls are steep, so take your time on them.

Getting there and nearby sights

Torc Waterfall lies about 7 km from Killarney Town and about 2.5 km from the motor entrance to Muckross House. It is one of the most popular stops on the Ring of Kerry route, and Ross Castle and Muckross House are also within reach from Killarney National Park.
