Em resumo

Stay in the town center for a car-free visit, in the old town for wooden houses and museums, by the harbor for whale tours and buses, or in the hills for skiing and forest paths. City buses are free, so any base close to the center works without a car. Book early for summer, aurora season and ski weekends.

How to choose a base in Akureyri

Akureyri is the largest town in North Iceland, sitting at the head of one of the longest fjords in the country, and the base you pick shapes your mornings more than your sightseeing. The Akureyri travel guide covers the town, and this page decides where to sleep. For the whole country, see the Iceland guide. Visit Akureyri describes a town of about 18,500 people that works as the center of trade and services for the north, which means rooms, restaurants and buses are concentrated in a small area.

Four bases cover almost every stay. The town center puts shops, cafes and the bus hub within a few minutes on foot. The old town lies a short stroll south and keeps the oldest houses and several small museums. The harbor and the Hof culture house suit whale tours and long-distance buses. The hills and Kjarnaskógur on the edge of town suit skiers, families and campers who value a forest path at the door more than a restaurant on the corner.

Price bands below run from $ (budget) to $$$ (upscale) and show how areas compare, not quoted rates. Visit Akureyri groups accommodation into camping, cottages, guesthouses and apartments, hotels and hotel apartments, and places outside Akureyri, so you can compare property types before you compare areas. If your plan includes the Diamond Circle, read the North Iceland guide before you fix the number of nights, because a base near Mývatn can replace one of the Akureyri nights.

The center is the default for a first visit. Hafnarstræti, the main street, runs through it, and the central city bus stop, called Miðbær, sits near the town square and the taxi station. Every city bus route loops from that stop, so you can reach the rest of Akureyri without learning a timetable by heart. Visit Akureyri states that travel on all city buses within the town is free, with weekday service from 6:28 to 22:55 and weekend service from 12:18 to 18:55, so evenings out on a weekend need a plan for the last bus.

Walking covers most things from here. The Botanical Garden is about 1.5 km from the center, the hilltop church sits above it, and the old town is a short stroll south. The airport lies about 3 km away and a path follows the coastline between the airport and Hafnarstræti, which is a pleasant walk of around 30 minutes if you travel light. The trade-off is parking. The municipality lists two paid zones in the center, P1 and P2, charged on weekdays from 10:00 to 16:00, and some street bays have a 2-hour limit, so ask your hotel about guest parking before you arrive by car.

2. Old town

History, slow mornings

The old town is the quieter alternative, a short stroll south of the center. Visit Akureyri calls the area a monument to the town's history, with many of its oldest houses preserved and the original street plan kept. The oldest building still standing is Laxdalshús, built in 1795, and the area also holds the Old Hospital from 1827 and the old theatre and primary school. Informative signposts guide a walk through the streets, and several museums sit nearby: the Akureyri Museum, the Nonni Memorial Museum, the Toy Museum, the Industrial Museum and the Motorcycle Museum of Iceland.

What makes the old town a good base is the look of the place. Many houses are covered with corrugated iron, which was used as a wall covering in Iceland to protect the woodwork, and some wear pressed iron plates imported from the United States in the 1930s, a method the visitor site calls rare outside Akureyri. The trade-off is distance from the harbor and the choice of restaurants, which is smaller than in the center. For a short stay, the old town works best if you plan to wander in the morning and take the free bus for longer trips.

3. Harbor and Hof

The waterfront gives you the fjord and the practical side of travel. The whale-watching pier sits beside the Hof culture house, and the same area is the departure point for buses. Visit Akureyri lists departures for the Strætó route 57 bus to Reykjavík, a journey of about 6 hours, outside the airport and at the Hof stop on Strandgata, so a night here removes the early walk to the bus on a travel day. The coastal path to the airport takes about half an hour on foot, and the airport is about 5 minutes away by car.

The harbor also suits travelers who have booked a whale tour from the town pier. Other departures leave from Hauganes, Dalvík and Árskógssandur, each a short drive away, and Húsavík lies about an hour east, as the Akureyri or Húsavík whale-watching guide explains. The trade-off is atmosphere: the waterfront is more functional than the old town, and it is a walk to the Botanical Garden and the church.

The outer edge of Akureyri trades walking distance for nature. Kjarnaskógur is the town's most popular outdoor area, a woodland of about 800 hectares with more than 1.5 million trees, playgrounds, grill houses and about 12 km of gravel tracks, of which 6 km are lit in the dark. In winter the same forest holds the largest organized cross-country ski area in an Icelandic woodland, with around 20 km of groomed trails, 6 km of them lit. A campsite called Hamrar lies beside it, and mountain bike trails link the forest to the Hlíðarfjall ski area to form a route of 21.6 km.

The forest is about 5.5 km from the town center. City buses 1, 2 and 5 leave from the town square, but the stop is about 2 km from the forest, so a car or a taxi helps. Hlíðarfjall rises above the town and the ski area publishes its own opening hours and open lifts, so check its site before you book a ski week. The trade-off is evenings. If you want to walk to dinner and the pier, this is the wrong base.

Town center or old town?

Most travelers choose between these two, and the decision comes down to what you do after dark. The center keeps you near cafes, shops, the bus hub and the broadest choice of places to eat, and it is the stronger base for a one-night stay or a late arrival. The old town is better when you plan two nights or more and want the streets to be part of the visit, with Laxdalshús, the museums and the signposted walks on the doorstep.

Distance is small either way. The old town is a short stroll from the center, so you lose very little by choosing the quieter option and walking in for dinner. If you have a rental car, the old town and the hills are easier to park near than the center on a weekday, because the paid zones cover the middle of town. If you travel without a car, the center or the harbor removes most friction.

Do you need a car in Akureyri?

For the town itself, no. The center, old town and harbor are close together, the free city buses loop through them, and the airport is a short taxi ride. A car adds cost and the need to watch parking zones. It becomes useful as soon as you leave town, because Goðafoss lies 35 km east on Route 1, and the Diamond Circle, Húsavík and Mývatn are all drives of an hour or more. Bus 79 runs between Akureyri and Húsavík with a stop at Goðafoss, but it has a maximum of 19 seats, so it is a backup rather than a plan.

If you decide to rent, collect the car on the day you leave town, not the day you arrive, and save the paid parking. Four car rental firms have desks at the airport. Read renting a car abroad before you sign, because wind, gravel and sand damage on Icelandic roads is often excluded from basic cover. The UK government advice names strong winds that can throw sand and ash, causing damage to hire cars that insurance may not cover, so check the excess you would pay.

When to book

Summer is the season with the longest light and the easiest roads, and rooms in a town of this size go quickly once flights and rental cars are fixed. The Botanical Garden opens its facilities from June 1 to September 30, the Diamond Circle is simplest to drive, and whale boats leave from several harbors. Aim to fix your nights first and book tours around them.

An aerial view of a city and a body of water, Akureyri

Winter has its own peak. Visit Akureyri gives late August through mid April for northern lights on clear nights, and the Hlíðarfjall ski area draws skiers when snow allows, so weekends in the cold months can be busy. Shoulder months, such as late September and October, bring dark evenings and quieter rooms. Check the best time to visit Iceland before you choose, and remember that auroras depend on clear skies, not on the calendar.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is booking the far hills for a trip without a car, then paying for taxis each evening. The second is relying on the free bus late on a weekend, when weekend service ends at 18:55 and you may need a taxi. The third is parking on a street with a 2-hour limit and leaving the car through a long lunch. The fourth is booking a harbor room for the quiet and discovering that the waterfront is functional rather than cozy. The last is assuming Akureyri replaces Mývatn: it does not, and a night near the lake can save a long evening drive.

Getting to Akureyri and the next step

Icelandair flies from Reykjavík to Akureyri several times a day in about 40 minutes, and the airport is the only international airport in the north. Visit Akureyri also lists flights from Greenland, London, Manchester, Zurich and Amsterdam on certain routes and seasons. The bus from Reykjavík takes about 6 hours. If you land from outside Europe, read EES explained for the border step on a first entry, and leave extra time on the first day.

Set up your phone before you land. An eSIM for Iceland gives you maps, bus times and road alerts as soon as you reach the arrivals hall, and travel insurance covers cancellations and medical care. When you have a base, plan the days with Akureyri in 2 days.

Perguntas frequentes

What is the best area to stay in Akureyri?

The town center for a first visit, because shops, cafes, the bus hub and the main street are close together. Choose the old town for history, the harbor for whale tours and buses, and the hills for skiing or forest paths.

Do you need a car if you stay in Akureyri?

Not for the center, old town or harbor. Visit Akureyri says all city buses within the town are free, and the center is compact. You need a car or a tour for Goðafoss, Mývatn and most other day trips.

Is parking easy in Akureyri?

Mostly, with limits. The municipality lists two paid zones in the center, P1 and P2, charged on weekdays from 10:00 to 16:00, plus street bays with a 2-hour limit. Pay by app or at a pay station and check the signs.

Where should you stay in Akureyri for skiing?

Choose the hills side of town near Hlíðarfjall if skiing is the point, and check the ski area's own site for open lifts. If you only ski one day, a center or harbor base with a short drive works as well.

Is it better to stay in Akureyri or near Lake Mývatn?

Akureyri has the museums, restaurants, airport and city buses; Mývatn sits closer to Dettifoss, Ásbyrgi and the Diamond Circle. Stay in Akureyri for a town base and near Mývatn if the loop is the whole plan.
