The Tropen-Aquarium at Tierpark Hagenbeck brings together tropical and aquatic habitats at Lokstedter Grenzstraße 2 in Hamburg. Walk through natural-style displays to see animals such as crocodiles and pythons, along with sharks in the large shark atoll and fish from freshwater and saltwater environments. A separate visit within the Hagenbeck site

The Tropen-Aquarium and the zoological garden are two parts of the Hagenbeck site and can be visited separately. The aquarium is at Lokstedter Grenzstraße 2 in Hamburg. If you are planning a visit to both, check the ticket options before you go.

Aquatic and tropical animals

The aquarium’s displays include freshwater and saltwater fish, sharks, crocodiles and poisonous snakes. The large shark atoll is one of the main places to look for larger marine animals. Natural-style exhibits bring together animals from land and water, including species that are less familiar to many visitors.

The wider Hagenbeck story began in 1848, when a member of the family exhibited six seals in Hamburg city centre. The zoological garden was built between 1902 and 1907, following Carl Hagenbeck’s idea of a nature-oriented zoo. In 1907 it became the first zoo without fences. The aquarium is a separate attraction within the site, so its visit can be planned independently of the zoo.
