At the Grande Écurie in Versailles, the Academy of Equestrian Arts presents a one-hour performance built around dressage, with music, dance and archery woven into the choreography. Riders trained at the academy work with several horses, displaying precise movements in the former royal stables. After the show, you can explore the stables in their original setting. This is a good choice if you enjoy horses or performance, but expect a formal equestrian production, not trick riding or a circus act.

A performance in the Grande Écurie

The Academy performs in the Grande Écurie, the royal stables completed in 1682. Built to house the King’s hunting horses, the building also contained a leading riding academy. Today, its equestrian performances bring the stables’ history into a live setting.

Bartabas founded the academy in 2003 as a place for both artistic performance and teaching. Its riders combine the Haute École tradition of dressage with disciplines including dance, singing, fencing and kyudo, or Japanese archery. The result is choreographed around the horses and riders rather than presented as trick riding.

What to expect from the show

The performance lasts about an hour and uses different horses for demanding dressage movements. Music accompanies the sequences, with dance and archery among the elements incorporated into the production. The appeal is the control and precision of the riding, and the way equestrian work is shaped into a stage performance.

This is best suited to people interested in dressage, horses or classical performance. If you are expecting circus-style stunts or trick riding, the format may not be what you want. Phones are not allowed during performances, so plan to watch without taking pictures or video.

The stables and the practical details

You can visit the stables in their original setting after the show. The Grande Écurie is also associated with the royal riding academy that once operated there, giving the building a direct connection to the history of horsemanship at Versailles.

Seats are on long wooden benches without backrests, and places are taken on a first-come basis. A seat pad can make the seating more comfortable. The arena is not heated, so bring warm clothing in colder weather; it also lacks climate control in summer. Drinks are not allowed in the main seating area, and you should check your ticket arrangements before queuing, as a booking confirmation may not be enough to enter.
