Cairns Botanic Gardens in Edge Hill brings rainforest walks and tropical plant collections together a short distance north of central Cairns. The free gardens include Flecker Garden, Centenary Lakes, themed plant areas and a Rainforest Boardwalk, with paths through greenery and views of birds and other wildlife. Look for orchids, carnivorous plants, fruit trees and Aboriginal plant-use displays. There is also a conservatory and a cafe nearby. Allow time to wander beyond the main garden paths if you want to explore the lakes and trails.

A garden shaped by the tropics

Cairns Botanic Gardens

The Cairns Botanic Gardens sit in Edge Hill, north of the city centre, where the warm, humid conditions support collections of tropical plants. The site began as a recreational reserve in 1886, and Flecker Botanic Gardens was established in 1971. Today the wider precinct includes 38 hectares of gardens and parkland.

The collections include both Australian plants and tropical species from elsewhere in the world. Rather than a single route through one garden, the grounds are divided into distinct areas, each with its own focus. Look for the Flecker Garden, bamboo collection, orchid house, fernery and the Gondwanan Heritage Garden. The gardens also include a section on Aboriginal plant use.

Rainforest walks and the lakes

The Rainforest Boardwalk takes you through dense vegetation toward Saltwater Creek and Centenary Lakes. The lakes include freshwater and saltwater habitats, and the surrounding paths are a good place to look for birdlife. Birds, turtles and other wildlife have been spotted around the grounds, though sightings are not guaranteed.

Centenary Lakes, the gardens and the nearby Mount Whitfield Conservation Park give walkers several options. The Arrow trails on Mount Whitfield climb through forest, with some steep stretches and views from higher points. These are more demanding than a gentle stroll among the garden beds, so bring water and choose a route that suits your fitness and available time.

Conservatory, culture and art

The conservatory brings together tropical plants such as orchids, bromeliads, cycads and carnivorous plants. It also has butterflies and exotic flowers. If you are interested in plant life beyond what you can see outdoors, set aside time to look around inside.

The Tanks Art Centre is part of the gardens precinct and adds a cultural stop to a visit focused on plants and walking. Nature's Powerhouse houses the Vera Scarth-Johnson collection of botanical illustrations of local flowering plants, as well as a visitor information centre. Check the centre or garden information for current exhibitions and activities.

Planning a visit

Entry to the gardens is free, and paths make it possible to choose a short walk or spend several hours exploring. Free guided walks are available; morning tours around 10am are noted, and weekday guided walks are also listed. Ask about the current schedule before setting out, particularly if a guided walk is central to your plans.

A cafe provides a place to pause, and grassy areas can work for a picnic. Insect repellent is useful, particularly around the wetter, leafy paths. If you are taking on the Mount Whitfield trails, allow for the steeper sections rather than treating them as an extension of an easy garden stroll.
