On the National Mall at 4th Street SW, the National Museum of the American Indian explores the histories, cultures and contemporary lives of Indigenous peoples across the Americas. Its curved stone building and water features set the tone before you enter galleries of clothing, tools, pottery, photographs and contemporary art. Start on an upper floor and make your way down. Families can also visit the hands-on imagiNATIONS Activity Center, while Mitsitam Cafe serves food inspired by Native cuisines.

Architecture shaped with Indigenous perspectives

The museum stands on the National Mall at 4th Street SW. Its curved exterior, built with Minnesota limestone, recalls a rock formation shaped by wind and water. Native architects were consulted in the design, and the building’s orientation follows the cardinal directions.

Water features and curved paths continue the design outside. The surrounding Native Landscape includes four areas: Woodlands, Wetlands, Eastern Meadow and Traditional Croplands. Together, the grounds and building form part of the museum experience, not just a route to the galleries.

Collections from across the Americas

The museum presents the histories, art and cultures of Native peoples throughout the Western Hemisphere, from the Arctic Circle to Tierra del Fuego. Its holdings include objects associated with sacred traditions and everyday life, as well as photographs and contemporary works. Exhibits bring historical material into conversation with Native life today.

Displays include clothing, pottery, tools, textiles, carvings and other artworks. Nation to Nation examines treaties between Native Nations and the United States. Other exhibitions have addressed Native leaders, service in the armed forces and the Chesapeake region. Exhibitions change, so check the museum’s website if you have a particular subject in mind.

The museum opened in 2004 with a commitment to presenting Native histories and cultures from Indigenous perspectives. Its work includes exhibitions, education and research, with Native voices central to how stories are shared.

A hands-on stop for families

The imagiNATIONS Activity Center gives children a place to explore Indigenous knowledge through activities. Hands-on options described at the museum include basket weaving, trying snowshoes and learning about traditional homes. It is a useful change of pace for families moving through the galleries.

Mitsitam Cafe serves Native-inspired food, with offerings connected to Indigenous cuisines from different regions. It is inside the museum, so you can take a meal break without leaving the building. The cafe may be crowded; allow for that when planning lunch.
