Monterey State Historic Park brings together adobe houses, gardens and museums across Old Monterey, near the waterfront. Follow the yellow sidewalk tiles along the Monterey Walking Path of History to see buildings tied to California’s Spanish, Mexican and early American periods, including the Custom House, California’s oldest government building. Inside the Pacific House Museum, look for its collection of California Native basketry. Guided walks and house tours add context, while gardens and outdoor exhibits make this a worthwhile stop even if you prefer to explore at your own pace.

A historic district spread across Old Monterey

Monterey State Historic Park is a collection of historic houses and public buildings rather than a single enclosed site. Its buildings sit throughout Old Monterey, with gardens and plazas among them. The district was once the centre of the city, and its preserved structures trace periods when California was under Spanish, Mexican and early American rule.

The park includes part of the Monterey Old Town Historic District, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970. The historic district contains 17 contributing buildings. Spanish explorers arrived in Monterey in 1602, and the Custom House Plaza marks a place connected with that early history.

Following the walking path

The Monterey Walking Path of History links the sites along a route of about two miles. Yellow tiles set into the sidewalks help you follow the way through downtown. The buildings are spread out, so allow time to walk between them and to pause at the gardens.

The Custom House is the oldest government building in California. The park also preserves the last remaining whalebone sidewalks, a distinctive detail to look for as you explore. Memory Garden and the Custom House Cactus Garden add quieter outdoor stops along the route.

Museums and house tours

The Pacific House Museum has exhibits on Monterey’s past, including a collection of California Native basketry on its top floor. The Custom House is also part of the park’s museum and historic-building visits. Guided and self-guided ways to explore are available, though access to some house interiors depends on joining a State Park Guide tour.

Stevenson House, Larkin House, Cooper-Molera Adobe and Casa Soberanes are among the houses that can be viewed inside only with a guide. Casa Soberanes is a two-storey adobe built in the 1840s. On occasional open days, visitors can see original furnishings, artwork and household objects arranged to reflect the home of a well-to-do family in the mid-19th century.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s Monterey connection

Stevenson House at 530 Houston Street was a boardinghouse when Robert Louis Stevenson stayed there for a few months in 1879. His family later donated personal possessions, now displayed in the adobe building. The house also had later lives: it became a centre of Monterey’s art scene in the 1920s and subsequently a showroom for interior designer Frances Elkin.

A guided visit helps connect individual homes with the larger story of Old Monterey. Guided house tours, a walking tour, the Pacific House Museum and the Custom House are listed as free. A guided walk of about an hour is a practical option if you want a structured introduction before continuing around the district.
