The museum follows Truman’s path from his early life and military service to the presidency, which he assumed after Franklin D. Roosevelt died. Its exhibits place his decisions in the context of the events unfolding around him. Subjects include World War II, the use of atomic weapons, the Berlin Airlift, the Marshall Plan, NATO and the early Cold War.

Interactive decision rooms focus on the considerations behind major choices. The exhibits also cover the desegregation of the armed forces and other issues from Truman’s presidency. This is a history museum with substantial attention to warfare and political decisions, including material that may be intense for younger children.

Documents, photographs, films and objects from Truman’s life give the political story a personal dimension. Among the items associated with his presidency is the familiar “The Buck Stops Here!” sign. A full-scale replica of the Oval Office shows the room as it looked in 1948.

The museum also explores Truman’s life beyond the White House, including his family and earlier work. His personal office is another point of interest. The exhibits were updated as part of a major renovation, and the museum reopened in 2021 with new interactive displays.

The library and its grounds

The library was dedicated in 1957 and was the first presidential library built under the Presidential Libraries Act of 1955. It preserves Truman-related papers, books and other historical materials for public access, research and exhibition. Truman remained involved after leaving office, helping with displays and spending time at the library.

The museum stands on a landscaped campus in Independence. The courtyard is the burial place of Harry and Bess Truman, along with their daughter Margaret and her husband. The grounds and the exhibits together make this a broader visit than a museum-only stop.

Planning your visit

Give yourself several hours if you want time for the exhibits, films and outdoor areas. A visit of about two and a half hours may not be enough to cover everything. Inside, look for the cars downstairs, Truman’s office and the Oval Office replica, then make time for the courtyard.

The Truman Home, a nearby National Historic Site, can add more context about his personal life. The museum is at 500 W US Highway 24 in Independence, with the entrance on the east side of the building. On-site parking is listed, including free parking.
