Stay in Gatlinburg if you want the shortest drive to Newfound Gap Road and plenty of restaurants. Choose Townsend for a quiet base near Cades Cove, and Bryson City or Cherokee for the North Carolina side, Deep Creek and Kuwohi. Pigeon Forge suits families who want Dollywood. Which town to choose? The verdict
Stay in Gatlinburg if you want the shortest drive to the park's main road and a town full of restaurants. Choose Townsend for a quiet base near Cades Cove, and Bryson City or Cherokee for the North Carolina side, Deep Creek and Kuwohi. Pigeon Forge fits families who want Dollywood and are happy to commute into the park.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles two states and has no town inside it, so your base decides your daily drives. The park is the most visited in the US, and the surrounding towns are busy in October and on summer weekends. This page is part of a wider USA trip, and it pairs with the 3-day itinerary.
Two questions settle most choices. First, which side holds your main hikes: Cades Cove and Newfound Gap lie on the Tennessee side, while Deep Creek, Oconaluftee and the Mountain Farm Museum lie in North Carolina. Second, how much evening life you want. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are lively and crowded, and Townsend and Bryson City are quiet.
1. Gatlinburg
Gatlinburg sits at the park's main northern entrance, and Sugarlands Visitor Center is only a couple of miles from the edge of town. Newfound Gap Road starts here, so the drive to Alum Cave and Newfound Gap is the shortest of any base. The town has a long main street of restaurants, shops and attractions, and hotels, cabins and condos spread up the hillsides.
The trade-off is crowds. The main road is congested on weekends and in October, the town center is touristy, and parking at trailheads fills early. Cades Cove is about an hour or more away on Little River Road, so a Cades Cove day from Gatlinburg is a long one. If you plan to spend two days on Cades Cove and Townsend's side, a Townsend base is better.
Property types include cabins with hot tubs, motel-style rooms near the strip and larger hotels. Cabins suit groups, while hotels in town suit travelers who want to walk to dinner. Ask whether parking is free and how far the property is from the main traffic.

Stay here if you want to be near downtown Gatlinburg.

2. Townsend
Townsend is a small town on the park's western edge, often described as the quiet side of the Smokies. It has cabins, inns, a few restaurants and a strong outdoors feel, with the Little River running through it. The park's west entrance is minutes away, and the road to Cades Cove starts a short way further on.
It is the best base if Cades Cove, Abrams Falls and the quieter western trails are your priorities, because you start the loop at sunrise without a long drive. The trade-off is limited dining and nightlife, and the drive to Newfound Gap Road and Kuwohi takes noticeably longer than from Gatlinburg.
Cabins and small inns dominate. Look for a property with a kitchen or breakfast included, since choices at night are limited, and check whether the host provides the park map and parking space for your rental car.

3. Bryson City and Cherokee
Bryson City is a small mountain town on the North Carolina side, with a railroad depot, river tubing and the Deep Creek trails nearby. Cherokee, a little farther along, is the gateway to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and the Mountain Farm Museum, and it has a casino resort and cultural attractions.
It suits visitors who want a quieter, often cheaper base and who plan to spend time on the North Carolina trails, Kuwohi and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The drive to Gatlinburg and Newfound Gap Road takes about an hour, so you can cross the park in a day, but you would not do it every morning.
Property types include riverside cabins, small inns and chain hotels in Cherokee. Rates are usually lower than Gatlinburg in the same season, though October is busy everywhere.

Pigeon Forge and the other options
Pigeon Forge is the next town north of Gatlinburg, with a long strip of attractions, dinner shows and Dollywood. It is not a hiker's base, since the drive into the park is longer and traffic on the strip is heavy, but it suits families who want a theme-park day in the same trip. Many travelers split the difference by staying in Gatlinburg and visiting Pigeon Forge for one day.
If you want a very quiet stay, consider a cabin in the hills above Gatlinburg or Townsend, but check the access road, since some mountain roads are steep and narrow in wet weather. For travelers arriving from Asheville, a night in the city before the park is easy, and it is a good base for the Blue Ridge Parkway. Our guide to Asheville covers it.
Which base for which trip
A first three-day visit. Base in Gatlinburg. Day one is Newfound Gap Road and Alum Cave, day two is Cades Cove with an early start, and day three is Kuwohi. Expect to drive 60 to 90 minutes each way on the Cades Cove day, so leave before sunrise or move that day to a Townsend night.
A hiking and quiet trip. Split your stay: two nights in Townsend for Cades Cove, Abrams Falls and the western trails, then two in Bryson City for Deep Creek, Oconaluftee and Kuwohi. You cross the park once over Newfound Gap Road, which is also the best scenery drive, and you avoid the Gatlinburg crowds on most evenings.
A family trip with a theme-park day. Pick Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg for the attractions, and take one full day in the park for Cades Cove or an easy walk. Children often enjoy the Mountain Farm Museum and the Oconaluftee elk viewing, which sit on the North Carolina side.
A short stop on a longer road trip. If you arrive from Nashville, Chattanooga or Asheville, choose the town on your side of the park and make it one night. A single night in Gatlinburg gives you the main road, a hike and dinner. See Asheville for a North Carolina stop and the parking tag guide before you park anywhere.

The price bands are rough guides: $ is a basic motel, $$ a mid-range hotel or cabin, and $$$ a larger resort or upscale cabin. Prices change with the calendar, so compare dates rather than towns when you book. October fall color weekends are the most expensive and sell out first.
Drive times are approximate and depend on traffic, which can double the time on Newfound Gap Road and the main strip in Pigeon Forge at weekends. Plan one crossing between Tennessee and North Carolina, not daily trips, and use the parking tag guide so you are ready at the trailhead.
Who should skip each base
Every town has a trade-off, so the useful question is who it does not suit. Skip Gatlinburg if you dislike crowds, traffic and a busy main street, or if your plan centers on Cades Cove, since that day starts far from the town. Skip Townsend if you want dinner choices, nightlife or a lively evening stroll, because the town is quiet after dark. Skip Bryson City and Cherokee if your hikes are all on the Tennessee side, since the cross-park drive is long, and if you are flying into Knoxville and want to be near the airport.
Skip Pigeon Forge if you are mainly there to hike, since the strip is a slow drive and parks at the trailhead fill by mid-morning. Skip a remote cabin if you are arriving late, driving in the dark or traveling in wet weather, because mountain access roads can be steep and narrow.
How crowds and season change the choice
The same town feels different across the year. In October and on summer weekends, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are congested, so a base outside the strip gives you a calmer morning and evening, even if it adds a short drive. Midweek stays and shoulder months soften the crowds, and in those periods Gatlinburg's convenience wins more often.
Winter is quieter everywhere, and some higher roads may close, so check road status before you plan a drive. In spring and fall, expect weekend peaks tied to wildflower and fall color seasons, and book earlier than you would for midsummer weekdays. If your dates fall on a major holiday, assume prices and traffic are high in all four towns.
A simple decision guide
Answer three questions in order. Where do your main hikes sit? If Cades Cove is the priority, choose Townsend; if Newfound Gap and Alum Cave lead, choose Gatlinburg; if Deep Creek and Kuwohi lead from the North Carolina side, choose Bryson City. How many nights do you have? With one or two nights, pick one base and accept longer drives. With four or more, consider splitting your stay so the daily drive stays short.
Then ask what your evenings should feel like. If you want restaurants and a lively street, choose Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. If you want a porch and a river, choose Townsend or a cabin outside the main strip. If you want a lower price, compare Bryson City against the same dates in Gatlinburg, and check whether a cabin with a kitchen cuts your meal costs.
Mistakes to avoid
Booking a Gatlinburg hotel for a Cades Cove-focused trip. The morning drive is long.
Planning daily crossings between Tennessee and North Carolina. Use one crossing, and keep other days local.
Choosing a cabin without checking the access road in wet weather.
Waiting until October to book. Fall weekends sell out first.
Forgetting the parking tag for the trailheads. Read the parking tag guide before you drive in.
Booking tips
Book as soon as your dates are firm if you travel in October, on summer weekends or on holidays. Cabins and small inns sell out first, and many require two-night minimums on weekends. If you are flexible, midweek stays are cheaper and the park is quieter.
Check cancellation terms, since mountain weather and road closures can change plans. If you are flying from abroad, make sure your ESTA is approved before you book non-refundable rooms, and compare travel insurance that covers trip delays. Add an eSIM and a rental car, since you will need your own wheels in all four towns. See getting around the USA for car-hire basics.
