The Purple People Bridge, officially the Newport Southbank Bridge, links Newport, Kentucky, with Cincinnati, Ohio, across the Ohio River. Its purple steelwork makes the former railroad bridge easy to spot, and the pedestrian route gives you views of the river, Cincinnati’s skyline and Newport’s riverfront. Walk the half-mile crossing to stand in two states, pause at historical markers and watch boats below. Sunset brings the city into view in changing light; on either bank, parks, restaurants and attractions extend the outing.

The bridge is officially called the Newport Southbank Bridge. It opened in 1872 as a railroad crossing over the Ohio River, the first to link Cincinnati with Northern Kentucky. Its role changed as transport changed: the structure was widened and strengthened for heavier trains, streetcars and automobiles.

Rail traffic ended in the 1980s. After the Newport Southbank Bridge Company bought the structure in 2001, it reopened as a pedestrian crossing and became known as the Purple People Bridge. Its distinctive color and public walkway now give the old railway route a new use between the two riverfronts.

Walking between Ohio and Kentucky

The bridge stretches about 2,670 feet, roughly half a mile, between Cincinnati and Newport. It is for pedestrians and bicycles, not motor vehicles. Along the way, you can look across the Ohio River toward the Cincinnati skyline, watch boats pass and stop at markers that explain parts of the bridge’s history.

The crossing connects the Ohio riverfront near Sawyer Point Park with Newport on the Levee in Kentucky. That makes it easy to pair a walk with time in a park or a stop at Newport’s dining and entertainment complex. The bridge itself is free to cross.

Views, photos and bridge etiquette

The purple-painted steelwork gives the crossing a clear visual character, while the river and skyline provide the changing backdrop. Sunset is a good time to see the city in evening light. The bridge also suits a family stroll, a jog or a relaxed walk between the two riverfronts.

Couples once added locks to the railings, but attaching locks is no longer permitted. Enjoy the view and take photos without leaving anything on the bridge. If you are driving to the crossing, check the parking rules first; parking is available near the bridge, but restrictions can apply.
