Sandia Peak Tramway

The Sandia Peak Tramway climbs from northeast Albuquerque to the crest of the Sandia Mountains in a 2.7-mile ride that takes about 15 minutes.

The Sandia Peak Tramway climbs from northeast Albuquerque to the crest of the Sandia Mountains in a 2.7-mile ride that takes about 15 minutes. From the tram and summit, you can look across Albuquerque, the Rio Grande Valley and the surrounding desert. Walking paths and hiking trails lead to different viewpoints, with interpretive signs along parts of the crest. The mountain is cooler than the city, and sunset brings a view of the sky changing over the valley as Albuquerque’s lights come on.

The ride to the crest

The tram travels 2.7 miles from the northeastern edge of Albuquerque to the Sandia Mountains. The ascent takes about 15 minutes. As the car rises above the mountain terrain, views open across the city and the Rio Grande Valley. The route itself is part of the visit, so keep an eye out during both the ride up and the return trip.

At the summit, the landscape feels different from the city below. The elevation brings cooler air, and wind can make it feel colder still. The outlook takes in Albuquerque, the valley and the surrounding desert; on a clear day, the view can extend across more than 11,000 square miles of New Mexico. Look west toward the Rio Grande Valley, then turn toward the mountain’s less populated eastern side.

Walking trails and viewpoints

Once at the top, you can walk to viewpoints along the crest or follow hiking trails. The Sandia Crest Trail has places to stop and take in the view, and signs along the route explain features of the local geology and the ecosystems found at different elevations. The Kiwanis Cabin trail is another option; the hike to the cabin from the tram is described as manageable for beginners and children.

Trail conditions can change with the season. Snow and ice have remained on sections of the crest trail in early March, so winter and shoulder-season hikes may call for suitable footwear and extra care. Choose a route that matches your ability, and bring water if you plan to walk beyond the viewpoints. The La Luz Trail is a much longer, challenging route, not a short summit stroll.

Planning your visit

The tram ride is a good way to reach the summit without hiking up the mountain. The cabins can feel enclosed, and the height is a consideration if you are uncomfortable with heights or confined spaces. The summit area has restrooms and wheelchair-accessible facilities, including an accessible entrance and parking.

Wind can delay or stop tram service, so check current operating status before leaving. Buying tickets online is recommended, particularly for popular sunset departures, when slots can fill. Arriving early can also help you avoid busy periods. If you are planning a meal at the summit, check whether Ten 3 is open before your visit; restaurant availability should not be assumed.
