En resumen

Spend day one on the Park Loop Road and Cadillac Mountain, day two on one steep hike and the carriage roads, and day three on the quieter west side or Schoodic. Book the $6 Cadillac Summit Road reservation first, since it is required from May 20 to October 25, 2026. Non-US residents 16 and over also pay a $100 fee on top of the $35 vehicle entrance fee.

The plan in brief

Acadia National Park is mostly one island, Mount Desert Island, plus a mainland peninsula called Schoodic. The island has one main road, the 27-mile Park Loop Road, a network of carriage roads and granite mountains that rise straight from the sea. Three days is the right length: day one for the loop road and Cadillac Mountain, day two for a hike and the carriage roads, and day three for the quieter side. This page sits inside the Acadia National Park travel guide, and the wider USA guide shows where it fits in a New England trip.

Most visitors fly into Bangor or Bar Harbor, or drive from Boston, which is about 5 hours south. The Boston travel guide is the usual start or end of the trip. If you drive up from the coast, the Midcoast Maine harbor towns make a good stop on the way.

Book the Cadillac Summit Road reservation first, because it is the one thing that sells out. The Cadillac Mountain reservation guide explains the booking windows, the sunrise and daytime slots and what to do without one.

Day 1 stops in order. The lines show the sequence, not the route to drive.

Morning

Start early at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center, or take the Island Explorer to the loop road once it is running. The Park Loop Road is a one-way loop in places, so follow the signs. Begin at Sand Beach, where cold water and a short boardwalk make it a good first stop, then walk the Ocean Path toward Thunder Hole and Otter Cliffs. The full Ocean Path is about 4.4 miles one way, but you can turn back wherever you like.

Thunder Hole is a rock inlet where waves boom in a narrow gap. It is most dramatic when swells arrive near high tide, so check the tide table before you go and treat it as a bonus, not a promise. Otter Cliffs rise sharply from the sea and give a wider view of the coast to the south.

Afternoon

Eat at Jordan Pond if it suits you; the lakeside lawn and popovers are well known, so check hours and booking rules before you plan around them. Walk the flat, 3.3-mile loop path around the pond for views of the Bubbles, two rounded mountains. Carriage roads start close to the pond if you want a longer, gentler walk.

Evening

Drive or ride to the Cadillac Mountain summit for sunset, with your reservation. At 1,530 feet, it is the highest point on the Atlantic coast of the United States, with views over islands, Frenchman Bay and Bar Harbor. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before your window, bring a warm layer even in summer and expect crowds at the top. Return to Bar Harbor for dinner; lobster rolls and seafood are the local choices.

The official NPS reservation page lists current dates and slot times. If you miss a slot, hike up the North Ridge or South Ridge trail instead.

Day 2 stops. The three hikes are alternatives, so pick one. The lines show the sequence, not the route.

Morning

Pick one hike. The Beehive is short, about 1.4 miles round trip, but climbs iron rungs and ladders along open cliffs, so it suits people who are comfortable with heights. Gorham Mountain is easier, with fewer drops and big views of the coast. The Penobscot and Sargent mountains give a longer day with fewer crowds, starting near Jordan Pond.

Start by 8am, since trailhead parking fills early. Use the Island Explorer to reach trailheads if your lot is full. Bring water, a layer and shoes with grip; granite is slick when wet or foggy.

Afternoon

After the hike, cycle or walk a stretch of the carriage roads. These gravel paths run for about 45 miles on the island and were built to keep cars out. Bikes are allowed, and the Island Explorer's bicycle service helps you get to the Eagle Lake entrance from Bar Harbor in season. For a short, easy loop, ride around Eagle Lake or walk the path between Jordan Pond and Bubble Rock.

Rent bikes in Bar Harbor if you do not bring your own. Check the carriage road rules for the electric bikes, since classes and trails differ.

Evening

Return for a slow dinner. Many restaurants stop serving by 9pm outside peak weeks. If you still have energy, walk the Shore Path along Frenchman Bay at dusk, which is flat and close to town.

3. Day 3: The quiet side or Schoodic

Start
Southwest Harbor or Schoodic
Highlights

Time
4–7 hours
Sleep
Bar Harbor or on the way out
Añadir a mi viaje
Day 3 stops in order. Schoodic is the full-day alternative. The lines show the sequence, not the route to drive.

Morning

The west side of the island is quieter. Drive to Southwest Harbor and walk the Ship Harbor trail or the Wonderland trail, both short and flat, with rocky shore and tidal pools. Check the tides if you want pools to explore.

Afternoon

Bass Harbor Head Light is a small lighthouse on a rocky headland with a viewing area. It draws crowds near sunset, so go earlier if you want space. Park only in marked spots and stay on the paths.

If you have a full day, the Schoodic Peninsula is a quiet, mainland part of the park, with a loop road and rocky shore. Island Explorer service to Schoodic began on May 20, 2026, and the drive takes about an hour from Bar Harbor. It is the easiest way to see Acadia without the summer crowds.

Evening

Return your rental car or head south. If you are driving back to Boston, expect about 5 hours without stops, and consider breaking up the drive in Midcoast Maine. Fly out of Bangor or Bar Harbor if you booked a one-way trip.

Where to sleep

Bar Harbor is the easiest base. It has restaurants, bike rentals and Island Explorer connections, and it is about 10 minutes from the loop road start. Rooms are costly in July, August and October, and many have minimum stays on weekends.

Southwest Harbor and nearby villages are quieter and closer to the west side. They have fewer restaurants and less transit. If you stay there, plan to drive, and book dinner ahead. Trenton and Ellsworth, on the mainland, have lower rates, and the new Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton connects with the Island Explorer in season.

Book early. Fall foliage weekends fill first, and many properties require two- or three-night stays. If dates are flexible, a midweek stay in June or September is easier and cheaper.

Getting around and what to rent

The Island Explorer is a fare-free, propane-powered bus system that serves Bar Harbor, the Gateway Center, many trailheads and carriage road entrances. In 2026, Gateway Center and Loop Road service began May 20, with most other routes starting June 23 and running to mid-October. Check the NPS Island Explorer page for current routes.

Cadillac Mountain is the exception: there is no bus on the summit road. You need a car with a reservation, a taxi, or your own feet. A rental car also helps for Schoodic and the west side.

Costs and entry rules

The 7-day vehicle entrance pass is $35, or $20 per person on foot or bike for visitors aged 16 and over. Since January 1, 2026, non-US residents aged 16 and over also pay a $100 nonresident fee, unless they hold an annual or America the Beautiful pass.

The Acadia fees page lists current prices. For how the fee works across all 11 parks, see our guide to the $100 US national parks fee. If you hold an ESTA, check our ESTA guide before you book flights.

Before you go

Weather changes quickly. Fog, wind and cold sea breezes are common even in July, so bring layers and a waterproof jacket. Cell service is patchy along parts of the loop road, so download offline maps and consider an eSIM before you fly. Medical care in the US can cost a lot, and travel insurance covers a hiking injury or a missed flight.

Check the best time to visit Acadia before you lock in dates. For rail and other transport planning in the US, see our transport planning guide.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is 3 days enough for Acadia National Park?

Yes. Three days covers the Park Loop Road, Cadillac Mountain, one big hike, the carriage roads and the quieter west side. Two days works if you skip the west side. One day only suits a drive with short stops.

Do I need a car in Acadia?

Not for most of the park in season. The fare-free Island Explorer buses reach Bar Harbor, the Gateway Center, trailheads and carriage road entrances. A car or taxi is the only way up Cadillac Summit Road, which has no bus.

Where should I stay for Acadia?

Bar Harbor for restaurants and buses, or Southwest Harbor for a quieter base on the west side. Rooms fill from July to October, so book early, especially for fall foliage weekends.

Do I need a reservation to hike in Acadia?

No, trails do not need a reservation. You need a park entrance pass, and a separate vehicle reservation only if you drive Cadillac Summit Road between May 20 and October 25, 2026.

What is the hardest hike in Acadia?

The Beehive and Precipice trails climb iron rungs and ladders on exposed cliffs and suit people comfortable with heights. The Precipice is usually closed in spring and summer for peregrine falcon nesting, so check the park first.
