Kyiv National Botanical Garden, also called Hryshko National Botanical Garden, covers the Pechersk hills at 1 Sadovo-Botanichna Street. Its broad grounds bring together gardens, wooded areas and themed spaces, including a Japanese-style garden, a rose garden and terraces for quiet walks. Paths climb to viewpoints over Kyiv, the Dnipro and its bridges. Spring brings lilac and magnolia blooms, while the changing seasons give the garden different colors and character. Set aside time for a long walk, and bring a picnic to enjoy on the grass.

Kyiv National Botanical Garden is named after botanist Mykola Hryshko and was founded in 1936. It became open to the public in 1964 and is part of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The grounds cover about 120 hectares and hold around 13,000 kinds of plants from different parts of the world.

Plant collections are arranged by geography and landscape. The garden includes areas associated with the Carpathians and Caucasus, Altai and Central Asia, as well as a pine forest, greenhouses and conservatories. Its size means a visit can be a short walk through one area or a much longer outing across the grounds.

The Japanese-style garden is one of the distinctive stops, alongside the rose garden and areas devoted to magnolias. The grounds also include a play area for children and arbours along the paths. A terrace shaped like a small Buddhist temple is used as a place for meditation or yoga.

Lilacs are closely associated with the garden. More than 1,500 lilac bushes bloom here, and spring also brings magnolia flowers. Other flowers and trees change the character of the grounds through the year, so the garden is not limited to its main spring bloom. In autumn, fallen leaves add color along the paths.

Viewpoints and walking routes

The garden’s hills open onto several views of Kyiv. At the Red Yard observation area, wooden gates, fences, a tower and a raised platform use forms inspired by Kyivan Rus. From here, the panorama includes the left bank and bridges across the Dnipro. Other vantage points look towards the river, the city skyline and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

The routes cross a large area, with paved paths as well as hills and steps. Some stretches may be uneven or poorly kept, so take care on stairs and allow time to walk between areas. The grounds can also be used for running and daily exercise. For a slower visit, choose a quiet corner, sit in an arbour or bring food for a picnic on the grass.
